As a solo artist I completely agree but with The Jam and some of his stuff with The Style Council was phenomenal.
Having just rolled in from the excellent Barnsley Live and reading through this thread, which Is a subject that crops up often when we're in the pub, firstly I have a few comments for my mate Jim. AM is indeed a cracking album, I think it's their best by a country mile. Nick Drake, you probably need to listen to him in the right mood a bit more often, but I think his first two albums are terrific. Two of my very fave 80s acts, Stephen Duffy and The Dream Academy, were very much influenced by Nick Drake. Indeed, The Lilac Time got their name from one of his lyrics, and Life In a Nothern Town was written about him. Neil Young, now there's one. The dictionary definition of beligerant. I actually like him, but his major problem is the two words missing from his vocabulary, 'control' and 'quality', and not necessarily in that order. There's a load of rubbish in his back catalogue, but there are also a load of gems But, if you ask me, the biggest overrated band of the lot are The Who. I like a few of their songs, but I really do think they are a load of overblown pompous rubbish. And that is without getting into the issue of a pop star being put on the sex offenders register for downloading kiddie porn but still being held up as some sort of hero. I just don't get the love for them at all. For me they had a few good songs in the sixties, so I file them alongside The Animals or The Troggs, who also had a few good songs in the sixties. But even then, my dislike of Pete Townshend can't let me hold them even in that hign esteem. So, The Who, that's who I think are overrated. if we're doing a most underrated band (act) next, can I be the first to nominate Buddy Holly?
It's 33 years since The Jam split up. You're right though, it's a very long time since Weller was a major influential song writer.
I always wonder what he could have done had he not died at an early age, his songs are just fantastic
The Who are the best band ever. There two best albums (arguably) were both seventies albums and must rank as two of the best albums of all time. It's all about opinions though. I don't condone what Townsend did, he gave his reasons but he was cautioned however he is no longer on the register. That aside (not to gloss over it) he is a very accomplished song writer and guitarist.
You're probably right. Back in his day he was completely overshadowed by the likes of Bowie which is understandable.

Most underrated bands are The Cribs, Milburn and The Enemy. Also Arctic Monkeys because IMO in 20/30 years time people will look back and realise just how good they are. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The Enemy. Had a decent first album, everything after was terrible. I think they actually got into their heads that they would be the next Oasis and just thought they could release what they wanted. Bombed afterwards.
Screaming Trees were a great band, I admit. Nirvana though were very good. The best of each wave of bands doesn't necessarily become the biggest. I loved Afghan Whigs whose Gentlemen was my favourite album of the 90s. Also Sparklehorse. Both of those bands probably sold very poorly but that doesn't mean Nirvana were worse than they really were. It just means other bands didn't get the recognition they deserve.
Very manic depressive though. I saw them live 3 times and they were brilliant each time. The first one was when Mark Linkous was in his wheelchair, a warm-up for Reading in 96, after he'd trapped his legs under his body during a previous visit to London. His suicide was inevitable. He may get some wider recognition at some point in the future, like Nick Drake has got.
So in conclusion, just about every band there's ever been is overrated. Lol. Like I've been at pains to say, just different tastes.
Sweet Oblivion was one of the best albums of that scene and Dust was great too. I wasn't really into the other bands who got lumped in with the whole scene because I'm only really interested in the bands who were more metal influenced like Soundgarden and Alice In Chains so Screaming Trees were about my limit. I think Nirvana did two things that the better bands didn't do - they released a single with a very catchy riff and a soon to be iconic video and they were the first to tap into the mainstream conscious because of that. It just makes me laugh when I hear Cobain referred to as a genius because he was nowt like IMO.
Aye but only one person mentioned The Who and I think he was drunk so in conclusion they are excluded from the list and therefore as I stated they are indeed, as I pointed out, the best band of all time.
You've just contradicted yourself. I'm not into Roxette, but one of their songs is on a playlist I listen to, reminds me of my mate who died when it was in the charts.
Great point Andy. I have some songs on my iPod by bands / artists that I generally don't like but I like that particular song.
