That about sums up my relationship with music. I'm not into any band in particular, just songs, don't care who it's by as long as it sounds good to my ears.
Agree with all that. I remember being really into Muse after their first couple of albums. They became mainstream and I can't stand them now. Still like the first couple of albums though. Same with Atreyu and Thrice. Not listened to em for ages, but their first couple of albums I had on repeat. I get bored quickly, that's why I know blink's my favourite band because I never tire of listening to em. Same with Nirvana, The Cure, Sinatra. So I suppose I do have musicians I prefer. But I really love that Tatu song. Remember them? Two young Russians or summat. Lesbian maybe. I reight like that tune. Dunno why. Same with Girls Aloud and Little Mix. I don't own any of their music but I do like some of the songs I hear ont radio. I have a varied taste.
Me and thee won this thread. Different strokes/tastes. No need for folk to mock what sounds good to other folks' ears.
Maybe it's because of Trevor Horn's brilliant production. I have the album, mainly for that reason. Some of Trevor Horn's best work. And, sorry Mario, sober now, but still think The Who are overblown and pompous! A few other revered acts I think are praised way above the enjoyment I actually get from listening to them are Led Zeppelin, Nirvana and The Clash. I like them all, Led Zeppelin less than the others, but they're not bands that I'd choose to listen to an album by any more. I just find them, a few songs aside, a little dull. But I did forget about the most overrated band in the entire history of music, so Mario, I'll remove my vote for The Who and give it to The Libertines. Absolute rubbish they are and I get dumfounded when their albums appear high up all time greatest lists.
Yes, they're not bad, but they are lifted by great production. Very little that Trevor Horn gets involved with turns out badly.
Conan you seem to know your stuff and have good taste but can't agree about NMH. 'In 'the aeroplane over the sea' is as good as it gets
Not a fan of the Beatles but I wouldn't say they're overrated, they inspired millions of other bands. But yet I love Oasis who many describe as a crappy Beatles tribute band. I also saw Stereophonics mentioned earlier which was a surprise as to me they aren't given anywhere near as much credit as they deserve, got their new song on repeat at the moment and I'm hoping to see them live later this year. I do think Arctic Monkeys are overrated though, there's only a couple of songs by them I can really listen to and they don't really have anything unique about their music as far as I can tell.
I made the fatal mistake of trying to 'appreciate' Neil Young by buying the Archives series and yes quality control is not his friend. Nick Drake I don't mind I just don't love him I prefer Dream Academy and Lilac Time to be honest. I pretty much agree about the Who a great singles band but most of their albums are unlistenable if you compare them to say the Kinks and their 60s albums it's like light and darkness (sorry Mario). The Clash is another good call a band I admire but don't love. Don't usually recommend stuff but give a mate of mines band a go https://www.reverbnation.com/terryanddead Underrated bands would involve a list as long as the overrated ones. From the top of my head. The Rockingbirds, BMX Bandits, British Sea Power, Ed Ball. On a bigger level I think both Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder are under appreciated.
This thread proves there is no accounting for taste..We are all different, No-ones right and No-ones wrong...just Different....Well apart from Me and Bossman...We are obviously right!
Bands and artists that I don't like and PERSONALLY THINK are over rated are..... The Pixies Oasis Kings of Leon Elbow Alt J The XX Muse Kasabian Arcade Fire Radiohead The Liberines The Strokes
I actually think Elvis is underrated. Not his music which I not really keen on but for his cultural impact. He created modern music as we know it for better or worse.
