All licence payers having to fund free TV licences for over 75s

    Disgusting move by the government. What makes a 75 year old suddenly so short of cash that doesn't affect a 74 year old?

    I can think of plenty of pretty bad moves by the Government. This is not one that even registers.

    It seems a little crazy to me that in 2015 we are giving out rewards for being alive. Surely bring alive is enough of a reward

    It's smoke and mirrors ST; the government have simply passed the cost back to the organisation that runs the service.

    Old age is the biggest ticking time bomb - as a nation we are living longer - causing a strain to services and to the finances. Ideal times we should be safe in the knowledge we will be looked after in our old age. We pay enough into the system in our lives but the money isn't available to make this work. Us of a working age may never get the chance to retire

    The worst part of it is that you'll no longer be able to watch programmes on catch-up on iPlayer and not pay the licence fee as they're closing that loophole.

    The licence fee is an anarchronism that doesn't seem to be going away :(

    I honestly dont know why I pay tv licence and cant say it bothers me I think it will be scrapped within next few years. But the governments not just current bit of my life time have made far more crazy decisions I dont agree with.

    Even the director general reckons the licence fee has only got about ten years at most left.

    My nan was well happy when she was coming up to her 75th birthday as she would be getting a free TV licence. As she said, it was the only thing that was worth still getting older for (obviously to see her family, she just meant specifically the number increasing)

    When you dig deeper into the beeb youll realise that its a bloated horrific badly managed organisation whos sole remit is to waste as much money as possible.

    Yes, but they're not just like everyone else are they?
    People over the age of 75 are:
    Likely to be living on their own having lost a spouse, and friends.
    Likely to be on low income, even if they have worked all their lives.
    Likely to have medical conditions that prevent them from travelling far / enjoying activities that the wider population can enjoy, such as going out or meeting friends.
    Less likely than the average population to be accessing entertainment via Internet.

    So the free provision of a tv licence could actually be viewed as something that is helping the welfare of a group of people who are at risk of loneliness /social isolation.

    As others have said, the tv license will probably be a thing of the past soon, but objecting to over 75s having a minor benefit like this is strange.

    Isn`t this "minor" benefit costing the BBC £65million ?
    While I have no problem with over 75`s getting free licences, they should be paid for by the people that gave them away, The Government!
    The BBC is being used as a Political wing of the Government , instead of a Public Service.
