It's over 600million that it is costing which is an astonishing amount. It is almost identical to the spending on ALL BBC radio and almost 2/3 the budget of the main channel BBC 1. The government choose to give the benefit to old people so why shouldn't the government fund it? Although personally I think that far too much is already spent on the elderly in the wrong places. It appears that all elderly spending is focused on keeping them in isolation.
I accept your point of view However, the BBC is a using the licence fee to try to play as a commercial organisation. It's abusing it's position. And as for providing it's services to profit making companies for free that's simply ridiculous and by that I mean barnsley player
Yes, I agree the Government should pay for it. I was relying to Supertyke's point that over 75s are just people the same as everyone else. They're not, and this is a "minor" concession, (per individual) when they are possibly seeing everything else cut.
I said they're people the same as everyone else in response to somebody else saying that they were people. We're all people aren't we? Should all be treated with respect and not living in poverty.
Lazy ba$tards should be out there looking for work instead of watching tv for free all day. Something about immigration too. Bloody foreigners and kids, and teenagers, but especially middle aged people.
They dont provide it for free at all though !+ They charge the club for this service, which is why getting rid of the local lads to save money is a load of twaddle.

wasn't part of this to also make the BBC more aware of the money it fritters away (allegedly) on multi tiered management, expenses and general piss ups. Personally I can't see why they can't at least be partly commercial (not ad breaks) because there's more free plugs for stuff than enough on their various radio and TV channels
The BBC has a commercial arrangement with the FLP to provide commentary. So all BFC have done is decided to take advantage of this cost free option...
So we can't prioritise people of greater need then? Take TV off me. I might not even notice. Take the TV off my 91 year old Mother in Law who can only go out in a wheelchair for very short periods of time, it would have a devastating effect on her quality of life. I really don't see the problem in prioritising an older community. Whether we should have a TV license any more, and how it is administered is an entirely different debate.
And about time too in my opinion, people still availing themselves of BBC product. As to the original post of TV licences for over 75’s. 1. Interesting point made on Andrew Marr (I think) on Sunday, where it’s a clever ploy by the government to switch any decision on free licences over to the BBC, the government didn’t want to be the ones to take them away and be seen as the bad boys, so just transfer it over and if the BBC decide not to provide them then they look like the bad boys. 2. However, my view on this is I don’t see how it actually costs a penny to provide free licences. It’s not like a free bus pass whereby they may be taking up a seat on a full bus and preventing a fare paying customer being able to get on the bus. It’s simply that they don’t need a licence. OK, it can be argued it’s lost revenue but it’s money that just doesn’t come in, it’s not that they actually need to shell out in order to provide that licence to the over 75’s.
We could all get rid of our tv`s and other assorted gadgets and get off rarnd our owd mams houses for tea, cakes and Countdown. Eeee if only I could.
The moaning about this by the BBC is shocking..."we've frozen the license fee", yes but there are thousands upon thousands of new homes being occupied every year and the population is growing so really they are getting more money but not having to spend any more to reach the audience. Now they are on about extending the licence to cover catch up (which is all I watch to be honest)...the best thing to do is stop paying the license and when someone comes to the door tell them to p*ss off, they have no legal right to enter your property and having a massively downsized BBC would be a positive thing IMHO.
Glad to be of service. I've not had a TV licence in 4 years and I didn't have one for the 4 years before that.
Might be summat budget wise. If they have a budget for x. And they then forecast spend based on that projected budget. If that budget is reduced they have to reduce spend etc. Effectively it's now a cost elsewhere they have to reduce in order to meet it. All paper shuffling and accounting magic meaning some poor sod on 100 per week will lose their job rather than reduce any of the top bods pay.
