shortly after he became PM, tony Blair visited St james's Park, Newcastle, and claimed that he remembered sitting at the Gallowgate end seeing Jackie Milburn score for the "toon".

Liz Truss visits Premier Food in Carlton and (according to the Barnsley Chronicle 10/7/15) states, "I have extremely fond memories of Barnsley, reading the Barnsley Chronicle in fact, seeing Dickie Bird and Geoffrey Boycott oping the batting for Barnsley.

Blair was born in 1953 - Truss in 1975.

To be fair to Blair, Milburn played for Newcastle until 1957 when Blair would have been 4. I can remember going up Blackpool Tower in a pram when I was younger than that, so its not impossible to remember something from when you are that age if it left a lasting impression....

Dickie and Boycott both played for Barnsley before 1956 though :)

It would have been a long trip from South Australia to watch a match!

I didn't realize he had ever lived down under, but he was living in Durham in the late 1950s apparently - which doesn't tie in with the dates, but I'd guess a lot of us have false memories of watching players from just before our time....

Or politicians just make things up in order to sound like they have connection to the area and to the voters. That's why they support every football club in the country depending on who is asking them

Quite right. Just like Call Me Dave claiming he would not instigate a top down reorganisation of the NHS or reduce Tax Credits.

You read it differently to me as from my reading of the article in the Chron it was the chairman of Premier Foods who made the claim that he'd seen Dickie Bird and Geoffrey Boycott opening the batting for Yorkshire and he's 74 years old so that claim of his isn't all that far fetched especially as he originates from these parts.
