Saying that we will have had our pants pulled down if we "only" get £1m for Holgate. I'd say the complete opposite to be honest. If we get £1m it will be the best business we have ever done. The lad has played 22 games in the third tier and done ok. I'd be surprised if a neutral watching his performances would identify him as a £1m signing. He's absolutely nowhere near the class of John Stones. In fact I don't think he will be as good as Tiler, Eaden or Moses. I know it's easy to say so and so club got this much for that player, but it's sometimes the buying club who gets their pants pulled down like the two clubs who signed Maguire and Lowton who weren't worth a bag of Haribo between them. That doesn't mean we should expect to get something similar for Holgate. £1m would be amazing business for me and I'd bite any club's hands off for it. As for the lad himself, what he does in his career is irrelevant to me.
I agree CT, I think £1m (plus add ons) would be a very good deal for us. I also agree that he's absolutely nowhere near as good as Stones but I think somebody is telling him he's close.
1m plus add ons like MK is fair. 500k.... nope. Unless the add ons are considerable. And I mean considerable.
I think there is only two years between them so Stones was roughly the same age as Mason is now when transferred.
I'd just like some closure on this deal now. Sooner we see the words 'Holgate leaves for undisclosed fee' the better.
Agree. I have been a defender of the undisclosed stance. However. Since we are being robbed left right and centre these days. Let's have these deals out in the open. Balls to the consequences. Let's see what mettle our board actually have.
^^ just that. I can remember when we sold scott flinders to palace for near on 1million look where he is now.
Flinders actually managed to pull it off in games. He stuck out like a sore thumb in training by all accounts Coaches and everyone knew his limits. So we took the money and ran. That was fair do. Stones and Holgate are a different kettle of fish
holgate has played 22 games in league one he probley wouldnt have featured if we werent so short with cranie and bree being injured. He did okay but is not a natural rb he is a cb. He is too lightweight at cb and got bullied a few times over season. He is not in stones class. If he gos villa within 4 years he will be playing championship or lower. Just my opinion take money and let him go give bree right back position move on.
absolutely agree. Get what we can for him. let his agent make as much cash as he can for himself the greedy leech. i do think if he wasn't given advice based on cash from his agent, he'd stay!
May if we are once again getting shafted can we please ask that we allow it to be done with some clarity and dignity may i also suggest that we open our eyes to the said fact instead of putting our heads under the pillow and believing that what is being shoved up our ar5es doesnt hurt or matter, we were ripped a new ar5e hole when we sold stones surely lightening isnt going to be allowed to strike twice.......or is it ben.
we had our pants ripped off with the stones deal , and with todays inflated fees 1 million for holgate is chicken feed , hes a class act and worth perhaps twice that , what is the point of our acadamy if we sell cheaply .
I think the sums involved on this one are almost irrelevant - for me it's more about a young lad, who's still got plenty to prove, having his head turned. It's such a shame. There's potential there; everyone can see that, but surely whoever is advising the lad understands that Villa (or whoever) reserves and the odd seat on the bench for league cup games isn't going to develop his career. Ply your trade for another season in League One, son. Show the world what you've got....and in another year or two you might be able to pick your club.
Could not disagree more Holgate has looked exceptional although not at the same level as Stones. If barnsley sell him for £1m it demonstrates that they have learnt nothing from the stone debacle.
