Trialist Paul Digby looking composed in the centre of defence. Good lad diggers. Take your opportunity!
Would be a surprise if Man United were to buy Digby from us. But it would be an even bigger surprise if they took a punt on the Stockport number 9.
Warren Joyce rang Van Gaal up after the match and said Stockport Number 9 absolutely terrorised the Defender on Trial from Barnsley. Told him it was like watching Emile Hesky in his prime but with the goal scoring prowess of Robbie Fowler and the touch of Bergkamp. Typical Digby should find himself up against such a talent while on trial.
There will always be a split view for a player who has never had a long run in the team. Personally I think there is a good player in there but like Jennings none of our managers have unlocked it yet. However I find it strange no team has taken him either an extended loan or permenant and if he is as good as stones, why he would he need to trial anywhere. I hope he does well in his career but he really needs to be playing more competetive league football by now. Injuries haven't helped but this is his make or break season for me.
This is shaping up to be the debacle I thought it might end up being. Digby goes just to keep Holgate company (or to lure Stones to Old Trafford according to one of the more fanciful theories on here) ends up signing for United for a relative pittance, is turned into a top notch central defender, and keeps Stones company in the centre of England's defence for the next 10 years. Meanwhile we watch alehouse football and spend our time arguing about the existence of a sell-on clause.
Yup, remember it well throughout the 79/80 season. Funnily enough, none of the 'experts' gave him stick during the following season when we won promotion and it was nigh on impossible to find anyone who'd admit they dished out the dog's abuse. I hope young Paul goes on to have a good career, at a decent level. Preferably for us.
Digby didn't want to go on the trial, wanted to stay here, but LJ persuaded him it was an opportunity he couldn't afford to pass over...
Ah that makes sense. Seems a real shame so few people turned up to this meeting. Credit to the club for being so open.
Our fans know (not "no") what they've seen with their own eyes. They are entitled to have an opinion based on that. Speculation about how good Digby could potentially be is just that - speculation.
Opinions always divided between fans regards players. Rooney, Lampard and many others all have haters. But as I stated above I feel Digger harshly treated, when you consider his injuries and time out of the game because of them, and instead loan or regular sub appearances to help regain match sharpness he only was recalled when squad was thread bare due to injury/suspension and hasn't had a run of games. And in the limited time on the pitch in the games he featured the team were out of form and low on confidence.
