70 years ago today, since the dropping of the first atomic bomb..

Stumbled across this site. It allows you to select any location in the world (I did so, on Barnsley) via google maps, and drop the 'Little Boy' bomb used on Hiroshima, to see the impact/devastation it would cause.

I suggest using the advanced option settings, where you can switch on the number of fatalities and serious casualties. You can also drop other nuclear bombs, more advanced ones, like the 1.2 mega tonne weapon the USA currently have, ready and pointing towards Russia at all times. 'Little Boy' was 'just' 15 kilo tonne. The effects on Barnsley are unreal.

Eye opening stuff.



Maybe a good discussion too, this topic. Do you believe the dropping of the bomb(s) (Nagasaki copped for it a couple of days later) was a good or bad thing?

In the world of many Japanese PoWs. I remember an old bloke coming into school and talking to us about it. He was a PoW in Japan and his words that day were etched into my memory.

 

That's a relief; it saves me sending you a four minute warning.

 

All those innocent deaths? Never. Surely there were other ways?

While you were dropping a bomb, very appropriate.

 

I'm not saying I agree with him but he was firmly of the belief, as are many who suffered, that it was justified. They (the Japs) were pure evil and to many who suffered the dropping of the bomb ended the Japanese evil.

 

I once wanted to apply for a position that had something to do with the Nuclear "plan" for South Yorkshire.

I actually got the plan for how to deal with the aftermath of a nuclear attack. After 30 minutes I put it away as the assumed consequences of such an attack were so devastating.

 

The yanks were pure evil for dropping the bomb. Terrorism, simple as that.

 

Maybe, maybe not but one thing is for sure and that is the stories told by those who fought in the war and who survived the hell of the PoW camps make you understand why they think it was a justified action. America weren't even in the war until the Japanese actions in December 1941.

 

Have you seen Threads? Deals with the aftermath of a bomb on Sheffield, and I think they used some sort of actual plan as a basis for the film too so might be familiar.

Probably one of the most harrowing films I've ever seen.

 

Threads is a very good film and like you say its very harrowing, even more so due to it being released during the cold war.

Yes it has. He then went on to film 'Home to roost', another classic '80s sitcom.

 

I can vaguely remember watching that film. Will have to look it up, sure it'll be on YouTube.

Home to Roost was very good.

I see Reece around harrogate on occasion.
