Judging by the way one or two write on here, I bet there were a few abusing the Chesterfield fans and then abusing the stewards and police so, whoever you are, thanks a lot for making me stand around on a hot day after a rubbish result. By all accounts the Derbyshire Constabulary don't need much of an excuse and our brave boys gave them plenty of ammunition today. I was in the left hand corner in the first half, and the right hand corner for the second. The vitriol spewing down from the stand was about equal at both ends. Why do they do this? Is it big, is it clever? Does it make them feel proud to sing "If you wear a yellow jacket you're a lovely person*"? They are just people doing a rubbish job, and sometimes doing it badly. But oh dear, oh dear - we seem to be rapidly becoming the Millwall of the North. My brother Ron said he wouldn't be attending many away games for the rest of this season, and I feel the same. It was a thoroughly dispiriting, depressing afternoon out. The first ten minutes were great. It went downhill afterwards, right into the gutter.
Unfortunately I have to agree. In front of us we had five Neanderthals constantly spewing malicious bile and behind us an ignorant pig of a specimen constantly abusing the Chesterfield black players whenever they touched the ball.....which was quite a lot. It's a sad state of affairs when you want to say something but can't for fear of causing a scene./ getting ****ted.
And there is the reason I only go to away games two or three times a season, and never anywhere particularly local. I have no desire to be associated with some of our away 'fans', the ones who take joy in baiting home fans, having a go at stewards, singing songs with racial undertones (or sometimes just being blatantly racist), grown men who are happy to turn their back on the game of football they are meant to be there to see to turn and swear at children for not joining in with all of their vitriolic chants. I can't be doing with folk more interested in causing trouble than supporting the team. I'm not a bloody kid anymore and I only want to go to games where I can take my little lad and not be worried about what he witnesses.
According to what I've heard from various sources they were being told they would be kept back for 15 minutes after the game as they entered the ground, which is no good if you've travelled a long distance and have to get a specified train. This is 2015 not 1985 we are being singled out as if we have a hardcore criminal element, we don't we have a very loyal passionate away support and some do get carried away but to treat fans of all ages like hooligans is not right.
We have a small minority of fans who bring nothing but shame and embarrassment on the club. It's going to be like this at a lot of away grounds and while they may revel in it, the vast majority of decent fans start questioning if they really want to bother with it all.
if you talk to any of the various constabularies up and down the footballing world, you will find that the away fans of Barnsley have a totally dreadful reputation.
It's unfortunate Phil that we do have an element of idiots who seem to think because they are at a football match they can behave like Neanderthals. some get carried away every week, that can't be right and it impacts on the 99% of decent fans we have
I'd usually agree about our fans but today I will stick up for them. The police and stewards were over the top and much to heavy handed. They seemed to have joy from throwing their weight around. Alot of winking to eachother, back pats and laughing after removing people could be taken as inciting and unprofessional. Locking away 1,975 away fans so the well behaved majority suffer was like 1980s football. I'd be really shocked if our club and supporters trust aren't asked to look into the behaviour of those in power on behalf of our fanbase after today. Although nothing will happen like at Port Vale when a fan had his head put through a glass window. The police made their job much harder than it should have been for them. There was alot of nice banter between the two sets of fans like the young lad in the stripped t shirt having chants at him that even his mates were laughing about.
As usual a small minority were an embarrassment. With 20 mins to go, having conceded 2 goals in 2 minutes, the bad losers wanted to get out and when that wasn't possible spent the rest of the game fighting and arguing with the police and stewards. Disgraceful and not exactly supporting the team, who probably don't feel like busting a gut for supporters like that. A real shame for those decent fans who suffer the consequences. Like others I have stopped going to many away games and after today I suspect that will be my last for a while...
If people want to go home instead of sit in misery then they should be allowed to. If players keep playing like they did today it will be the fans who won't feel like busting a gut to go in big away followings to watch it.
just about word for word how I feel. I would cross the road to avoid some of our "support" in any other walk of life. Why do I want to be treated as a football moron when i am out watching Barnsley just because i happen to be in a crowd that includes these morons. Our reputation is now starting to have an adverse affect on how we are treated as away fans, and I just don't want to be part of that. Add in the sad state of affairs on the pitch (the second half today was as bad as anything I have seen in the last year, totally outplayed) and I can't see me attending many awnay games this year. you know, I've had a lovely summer and not missed the football one bit. And now its back, I can't say I am excited about it at all. Today was just disheartening, in lots of ways.
I'll be kind and suggest you might view things through rose tinted glasses. But to suggest that our away following is just passionate and that a few just get 'carried away' is a tad ridiculous. There are individuals regularly attending away games that put themselves across as little more than barely toilet trained thugs. The behaviour displayed and some of the language used, and I don't mean swearing - I can live with that - leaves me unwilling to travel a lot of the time. It does appear to be a minority, thankfully, but not so few as they wouldn't be noticed. Passionate supporters back their team. They do not need to use racist language or threaten violence to stewards (or opposition fans), nor do they need to use foul and threatening language to fans of their own team, including children, for joining in with inappropriate songs or chants. It wasn't so long ago I went to most games up and down the country, went to a fair few away last season and if I'm honest I'll probably relent and go to quite a few this season, with or without our young 'un, but the reputation Barnsley have is not completely unearned and I know that if I choose to attend away games then I will be treated the same as the worst offenders just by association.
Sit in misery or get behind the team to lift their spirits to get a goal back? Not great fans then are they? They were all warned they'd be kept in at the turnstile on the way in. They wanted to get out to sup more ale and cause trouble. The police were never gonna let them out.
thats the point though we were told there would be a delay, it was very common in the 80s and 90s but the way quite a few acted today it was pretty embarrassing , its 10 mins of their lives , what happened to doing as you were asked and showing some respect to people in authority ?
The way I saw it was this: Arrived at the station. Policing a bit keen, but not overly aggressive. They were happy to let me and the people I was with through and on into town to meet our friends, even though some of us had colours on. On entry to the ground, we're welcomed by polite but strict bag search, and a notice saying we'll be held back after the match. A bit OTT but then again, after last season, can't really blame them. During the game the usual suspects in the right hand corner start singing their glorious repertoire of chavvy songs, picking on individuals in the Chesterfield area. Barnsley go 3-1 down, and there's an attempted exodus from the folks who have decided that they have had enough/ getting a beer is an urgent priority. The police won't let them leave. Probably an infringement of their movements, and it probably would have been wiser to let them go, BUT what happened after just makes me cringe to be a Barnsley fan. People old enough to know better pushing Policemen and Stewards, about; to the usual chorus of "we're Barnsley FC, we'll do what we want" The decision to not let people onto the concourse to use the facilities was ridiculous, but it's brought about by the yobbish behaviour of a minority.
********! They can't use those sort of excuses for treating human beings like cattle. It's a disgrace in the 21st century. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
