I'm looking forward to it as much as when I was a kid! Perhaps it's about time I started acting my age! There's been some excellent victories over the years, eg. 4-2 vs Walsall (1971/72), 4-0 vs Rochdale (1977/78), 4-2 vs Halifax (1978/79), 3-0 vs. Fulham (1983/84). Unfortunately, there's been some poor defeats, too. Like the 3-1 loss to Carlisle (1984/85), 3-0 against Sunderland (1991/92), 4-1 vs Coventry (2007/08) and the most embarrassing of all, 3-0 against Sheffield Wednesday (1979/80). Going into work the following Monday morning was a great laugh, I can tell you! Not only do I look forward to watching my team in league action again, but I get the opportunity to see and meet up again with the friendly faces of the folk I've not seen since Spring who sit around me, the likes of Jay and his family & nezbfc and his. I'm an optimistic fan at the best of times, but it's even more acute prior to the opening home match of the season. Just hope I'm not in a pit of despair at five o'clock this afternoon and spouting at poor, old barnsley66 "Never again! That's me done with 'em!".
I get to see Nezbfc quite a bit so I can only extend my sincerest sympathies to you. Last season wasn't a great start to our home campaign either but I've got a feeling we'll be collecting all three points today.
Being the rose tinted specs wearing happy clapper that I am, Mario, I could see positives in the home defeats to Crawley & Crewe last season. Even if cleverer folk were telling me otherwise. However, even I couldn't feel anything but humiliation after the games I quoted.
Cheeky bugger! I doubt it, old mate. Health wise I have to be careful these days what I drink, which is why, unfortunately, I won't be able to attend next Saturday's BBS get together.
Well said! It's the oy thing in this life which makes me feel.like a little boy again! Nowt else like it!
You missed my personal favourite, 4-0 v Shrewsbury in 81-82, the first time many of us had seen us play at that level, Barnsley having been in the bottom two divisions for over 20 years. We all thought we had a good team, but until that game we didn't know for sure. We did by 5 o'clock, it was frightening how good we looked. I've not much confidence in our prospects for the season, but that doesn't stop me looking forward to the games. I'm going to the pub, I'll see people I haven't seen for months and I'm buzzing just as much as I ever did. Anyway, if I could predict football results I'd be a much richer man than I am. That's the beauty of football, the team takes zero notice of what fans/experts/pundits think of them, absolutely anything can happen. Here's to the young team proving me wrong on a consistent basis.
Flipping heck, you're right! How could I forget that game? My memory is getting worse the older I get! Perhaps I ought to start wearing one of those old, pointed dunce's hats. It'd certainly be appropriate! See you later, my old friend.
I think us having such a young team helps me with the optimism, too. No one knows how good these kids can be for us.
First one I've missed for 29 years. Unable to get a flight this morning from Hungary, so I hope Player is without problems.
I'm like a child when we lose immediately after a match with the sulking & tantrums. The conversion from being a mere fan to being as knowledgeable as Sir Alex when it comes to solving all our problems supercedes anything experienced by Saul on the road to Damascus.
Well, that was a fortunate victory. Still, give me a lucky win over an unlucky defeat any day of the week, but it was certainly an ugly win. Definitely room for improvement, though.
