"Harris said afterwards that he had given his players responsibility to decide who to pick up when Barnsley won a free kick or corner" Now I'm no football manager, but even I can see that this is a rather random half arsed approach to management. I mean, we scored the best part of 20 goals or more from set pieces last season and he deploys a tactic like this in a game. No wonder we scored 3 goals from balls played into the box. It does sound a bit incompetent. It reminds me a bit of zonal marking which I always found bizarre. Somebody said, zones don't score goals - players do.
When I played for the hospital team in Liverpool 25 years ago we were defending a set piece and one of our players, a bloke in his 40s was stood on his own. When I questioned who he was picking up he answered "I'm marking space". That continues to puzzle me to this day!
If you have a few good headers of the ball in the key zones zonal marking can be very effective. Hence why Barcelona concede very few from set pieces,
