It works when you do it properly - we didn't in the case of Iraq. And where ISIL are concerned a ground offensive is probably going to become the only option.

No it wasn't. Those plans already existed as standard procedure for situations like that.

There's no reason why the refugees can't be temporarily relocated to islands where they're away from imminent harm. Surely we could help that process.

You think we should helicopter people out of the USA Embassy ? That is what Frequent Wind was, the evacuation of people from Saigon .
What does that show us ? I am genuinely baffled.

There is the risk of an ISIL attack, or an ISIL inspired attack almost anywhere so I'm not sure what you mean. The FCO only advises against travel to a tiny part of Saudi Arabia, along the Yemeni border whereas the vast majority of the country is considered as safe.

This. Borders need to be protected, by force if necessary, otherwise you should expect to be invaded. Agree also with your subsequent post re the inevitable need to deal with ISIL, however as we already have a sound understanding of what constitutes ISIL territory, before there are any boots on the ground I'd level the place.

 

It seems that all these fleeing now are trying to call all the shots. You would think anyone who was fleeing persecution would be humble and grateful for anyone to accept them. You would think it would be the vulnerable women, children and the elderly that would be helped to flee and the young men would be staying and fighting to protect their homeland. I find the images worrying as it seems to show young men in westernised clothing fighting to get to the best place they can, you see very few of the vulnerable. I wouldn't put any of our troops on the ground while very capable young men are fleeing to have fun while we are fighting to save there country that they probably have no intention of returning to.

Having seen that the vast majoirty of these people are according to news reports men of fighting age leaving predominately muslims countries with a reputation for fundamentalism then the sorry we are full sign needs to be raised.

We need to look at ensuring our own borders are preserved first then look at resolving other issues by means other than letting them in.

Id hazard a guess if you did a straw poll in hungary greece italy germany etc of the average man I wonder how many actually say let them come...

On top of that the far right is slowly simmering again in rhe uk.

So overall **** em. Need to look to Australia for answersnin handling this.

Note: on the occassion it is a genuine case for asylum then I have no qualms about the nesscessary help being provided

 

What I don't get is why do we think we can solve the problems of these Arab county's by democracy? They don't have political parties like us. Its religious factions and they don't float about each other like our floating voters. The people who would be voted in would simply be the greatest number and the only way opposition could make inroads is to wipe a few of them out.
