And I have had the misfortune to witness five. I have never been so bored watching Barnsley FC. We've been served some reight ***** over the last fifteen years but this year takes Barry's biscuit tin. The football is a reflection on the state of the modern game where players with very little talent can make a decent living while clubs, the media and supporters alike try to convince the nay sayers that these are good players but the game has "moved on". Take Rothwell for example. I was at Rochdale and not since David Fox have I seen such a pointless footballer. How he became a professional is a mystery to me. What makes anyone in football say "what we need is a central midfielder who can't tackle, doesn't have any pace, can't thread a through ball and never scores". It's almost anti-football.

The type of pondering, insipid football we are witnessing at the moment is clearly Johnson's philosophy. Based on the first six harms it's not taking us anywhere.

I was actually dismayed when I checked the fixtures again on Satdi and found that we are at home again. Could easily be a sub 8,000 gate for hat one.

It's been absolutely dire Conan and shows no sign of changing the way Lee Jay sets the team up.
On 1st viewing the team sheet on Saturday my heart sank.
No way in a million years will this football were playing entice the missing fans back and to be honest if things carry on as they are people will be more inclined to stay away.
We need a more promising display on Saturday otherwise we could end up sliding further into the mire.

You obviously didn't go when Machin was in charge, nor Spackman come to think of it.

Yes I did and that was dire as well.
We seem to have a habit of placing some real Turkeys in the hot seat at Oakwell

    1) He said the last fifteen years, Machin took over more than 20 years ago.

    2) Machin didn't play with one up front. Admittedly sometimes we set up with 5 centre halves on the pitch though...

The two Andies: Rammell and Saville. A strike partnership that dreams are made of.

I'll raise you to an Iley

We had some pretty dire stuff under Hill and Davey at times as well

Im a bit luckier as I've only seen us at Milwall - where we looked quite decent, against Everton - which doesnt really count and at home to Bradford- OK not our fines performance

I do think we need to give LJ some more time to find the winning and entertaining formula - 6 games isnt enough. Will he ever deliver it - I dont know but we need to give him more time thats certain

Why do people say we're only 6 games in? He's had since february (was it?) when he was appointed and only won 6/7 league one games since. Not close to being good enough.

The same Thordarsson who had us top really without a pot to piss in. Who made the best of what he had? Who was then shafted by Ridsdale?

Beat me too it, Thordarsson worked miracles under the circumstances.

Granted, he did a good job I agree. But the discussion was on the standard of football. When Gorre was out of the team, it was worse to watch than what we are presented with now, regardless of results.

Garry Monk and Brian O'Callaghan as a midfield partnership? Total football, it wasn't.

You do know we had a transfer embargo don't you?

We sold our only striker to Swindon and went until January using a winger as a makeshift replacement.

Yes, that's not my point. Point is that you said originally this is the most bored you've been in 15 years, worst standard of football etc. I'd much rather watch this Reds team than Thordarsson's personally.

Machin DID start playing with one up front. By the end of January 1992, the team had slipped dangerously close to the relegation zone. He'd been struggling to find a formation which would get the best out of the huge number of players he'd brought in the previous Summer. After a 3-1 home defeat to fellow relegation candidates Plymouth (Dwight Marshall scored a first half hat trick for them), Machin opted for a 5-4-1 formation to stem the tide of losses. His formation meant David Currie being played wide right (despite being left footed) and Brendan O'Connell being used as a lone striker.
Results improved, but the quality of football on display was far worse than anything witnessed these past few seasons. Machin admitted it was dire, but insisted we wouldn't play with more than one striker until we were safe and he was true to his word.

Bit unfair in general but I was at QPR on the infamous occasion when we played dangerous Brian ( OCallaghan) as our striker in what seemed to be a 10-0-0 centrehalf only formation. One of my all time low points as I went with a QPR supporting mate and was sitting in their end being given patronising sympathy for having to watch us every week

If you'd witnessed a Reds team managed by John McSeveney you'd know how dire dire can be.
