What would be the BBS reaction if winnall was consistently on the bench. With Smith, Watkins and Jackson this is a distinct possibility with LJ seemingly unwilling to play with 2 strikers. Does it matter if we are winning or would you like to show loyalty to a player who is committed to us and always gives 100& and scores goals. I would love to hear your views or do you think SSW will be a regular starter even if smith plays well? Sent from my Hudl HT7S3 using Tapatalk
They'll all get played at some point, got to take their chance when it comes, Winnall did himself no harm with his performance yesterday. I don't think we can just pick a player every week because he's popular if it's not working. Doesn't strictly answer your question but that's my thoughts.
Just glad we've some options up front. It's up to each one to make the most of their opportunity when they're presented with it.
The team should be picked to get the best out of Winnall aslong as he's playing well. He'll always get goals. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Had this conversation with a friend yesterday. If you play Winnall up front all season, with a strike partner, if he stays fit, he will get 20 goals a season. His partner will presumably chip in with several goals. Show me any club in the country that doesn't want a 20 goals a season striker? For this reason, I think our team should be selected around Winnall & his strike partner; and not around accommodating midfielders, especially midfielders who don't belong to the club. If you play 4-4-2 with Winnall in the side, you've got a good start.
At our level pick your best players then worry about the rest. Winnall is one of our best players so I'd expect him to play
If we play with 5 in midfield, I think Smith plays up front. If we play 4 in midfield (diamond) then the best front two is probably Smith and Winnall. I expect us to use both systems dependent upon the opposition and whether we are home or away.
We don't know if this Smith is any good, not yet. I would normally argue that Sam can't play that lone striker role, but yesterday he showed otherwise. Looks a lot fitter now too, after his early injury troubles. Same goes for Hourihane.
This has been my argument about Hourihane. He's not good enough to play in a 2 man central midfield so we have to lose either a striker or play with no wingers. For me, we should be building the side to suit Winnall who is our biggest goalthreat and that is surely with a Target Man type striker alongside him and 2 wingers getting balls into the box? If that means playing Hourihane on the left or even dropping him, so be it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I thought he played well yesterday, not saying he didnt. But overall, to me, our team would be a lot better more consistently with 2 upfront and 2 wingers getting the ball in the box. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Imagine if Hourihane could play in midfield two, Smith turns out to be a decent striker for us and Williams gets back to his best. Davies Wabara Mawson Nyatanga Smith Watkins Hourihane Scowen Williams Winnall Smith That would be a scary team. We can dream.
I'm certain we were told by those far cleverer & more knowledgeable than I that Hourihane and Winnall couldn't possibly play together in a winning team. Yet, unless my eyes were deceiving me, both played extremely well yesterday (with Conor deservedly being awarded MOTM), as did the team, in a big win over impressive opposition. It's so confusing for a big, thick, racist, trouble causing Ponty Ender like me to understand!
On the basis of yesterday's evidence, Conor could play in a two. He made more tackles, broke up more play than Pearson did, who continues to give away cheap possession, and, isn't our player. I think he did well in a two, Conor last season. Not sure which game it was, but Bailey played with him. But I'm not really arsed which shape they line up in, I'd just like to see round pegs in round holes, with our more consistent and best laikers picked.
Unless he's badly out of form then he starts for me. Hourihane, Scowen & Winnall are our 3 key players, they're all young & talented, all belong to us & the team should be built around them
To be fair, I like both players, but the problem has been that Hourihane has previously been powderpuff in the tackle. Hence when he plays we seem to always have other players in midfield to compensate his lack of grit. Yesterday, he really put himself about, won tackles etc. We need him to do that so that we can have a 4-4-2 or a 3-5-2. The problem is, that when he consistently gets that into hos game, he'll be off to bigger and better things. He was brilliant yesterday. Still stick to the idea that if you have a 20 a season striker on your books, you build it around them though.
