I'm curious. Did the other players who weren't as 'powder puff' as Hourihane score as many goals, or create as many as Conor? If they did, then Hourihane has to produce the tackling as well as scoring and creating goals, it's only right and proper. However, if they didn't, Conor must've been doing their share on the attacking front, so it's only fair they do his when it comes to defensive duties.
I suspect the players picked ahead of Conor offer less in terms of scoring and creating goals, but offer more in terms of preventing them. If Conor puts in the shift like he did yesterday, I see no reason why we can't play a team with 2 up front, and him in the side. We have a glut of talented midfielders. My preference would still be to have a side with Winnall plus one up front, and Conor in the team. Something has to give. Maybe Pearson, probably Crowley. These players all offer something to the side. But imo, you don't turn your nose up at a 20 a season striker. (especially if he's backed up in a side that can accommodate a 15 a season midfielder)
I appreciate that, Fiona. But it always seems to me that the creative, productive player is the one who gets it in the neck, yet the defensive, sterile, unimaginative ones never seem to suffer the same level of criticism for their failure to be creative. As for formations, if there was just one which would guarantee success all clubs would play it. There isn't and they don't. Personally, I'd select Sam Winnall as I believe he's our best striker. He can score goals, he works his socks off for the team and he showed yesterday he can also play the role of lone striker very well, despite some trying to claim otherwise.
As someone else has mentioned, if you have a 20+ goals a season striker, for me the team should be built to his strengths. I understand CH scores a good amount of goals too but who's to say those goals wouldnt be more than compensated by playing a different system (4-4-2) which is possibly more suited to a greater amount of our players? In an ideal world CH would be able to play in a 2 man midfield but for me, he cant (PNE aside). Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I would like to see Winnall partnered up front with Smith. Winnall certainly has the potential to bag a hatful of goals with the proper service, but if Lee Jay gets the results like yesterday I will be happy whatever the formation.
Agree. I've said all along that LJ needs to make decisions that involve dropping very good players. I still don't think 1 up front as a tactic is a great idea over the season, when you have a player of Winnall's scoring ratio on your books. I don't know what our best team is, but I'd go for probability, and if you put WInnall and Hoorihane in your side, you'll probably get loads of goals.

This is how I see it aswell, I think we can be equally as successful with both formations but what i think LJ will do is play winnall in a 442 and hourihane in the 5. Can't see the 2 playing together in LJ longer term plan. So Crowley wilko and rothwell will go back to their clubs and we will sign Pearson when hourihane goes in January. For us to get a good fee for CH he will play in his most suited position up the pitch in a midfield 5 up until the transfer window opens meaning Sam will have to spend some time on the bench then hopefully we will have some money in the bank and SSW back in the team for the promotion push. Its a bit cynical but CH is our biggest asset at present and this is why he will be in the side and we will continue to play with 1 striker. Sent from my Hudl HT7S3 using Tapatalk
But a fully firing Sam Winnall knocking the goals in would surely be worth more than CH? Goalscorers are what every club is after. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
