I highly recommend a trip up ONE WORLD TRADE CENTER. My sister was visiting so we took them there, what a fantastic experiance. It starts with the interactive elevator ride,1700FT in 1 minute. Also would say if you can head up an hour before sunset,do that. Then and enjoy the view at the bar/restaurant up there. We got to NYC on Friday around 11.30 after taking the Vamoose bus from Bethesda MD.We were staying at the Holiday inn, madisson square garden area, so we had just a 2 block walk from the bus stop. All week in DC we managed to be one step ahead of the Pope and NYC was no different. We did a habour boat trip on the Zephyr, then headed to 9/11 memorial and hung around there till 6 for our trip up the new tower. When we came down around 8.30 we headed to little italy for some fantastic food. Then into times square. This was my 4th trip to NYC as everyone always wants to go when they visit us. If anyone is planning a trip we would be more than happy to recommend hotels and places of interest to visit.
I caught a 226 to Stairfoot this morning and later bought some rich tea biscuits in Poundland. You don't have to go to New York to live the dream.
Ive been to New York a couple of times, but given its always been working I haven't had time to visit the city or chill out there. Staten Is dumpit site was interesting though !! So recommend away......Hotel, Places to Visit, Restaurants, Bars etc I am considering taking the family in October.
What's that? We looked and looked for something of interest on Staten Island and constantly drew blanks, so we just hopped on the first ferry back as soon as we'd arrived!
I've just been there this weekend!! Saw Giants v Redskins, Yankees v Chicago White Sox and Jets v Eagles. Stayed in Williamsburg in Brooklyn...
Where exactly did you stay? We spent a week in Williamsburg in the Henry Norman Hotel and thought it was loads better than Manhattan. Absolutely loved it. Especially the breweries!
In a flat just by Bedford Avenue L train that we got on airbnb - it was brilliant, so we were only about 300 yards from Brooklyn Brewery.
a place I have wanted to go to for decades...........and I went there for 4 nights before going on to Cancun for 10 nights while in New York I was sort of comparing it to London; principally because New Yorkers claim that New York is the Number 1 city in the world: My conclusion was this: Its a city well worth seeing - however, in my opinion London is a far far better city, because: It is prettier - there is nothing on the streets of New York that is attractive. the buildings are impressive because of their size, but other than the woolworths building they are not beautiful structures. There is more fasion on the streets of London - New Yorkers look like the rest of Americans, shorts and T Shirts. This was a big surprise. There is more diversity of people on the streets in London - people in New York are generally white and generally quite small in height. I saw only 3 turbans in New York - and only one sari There are very few pubs in New York There are very few street cafes in New York I didn't see a single Indian Restaurant London has better parks London has better museums London has better buildings A Saturday night out in Greenwich Village is nowhere as good as an average English city. There is very little mention of the importance that cities such as Liverpool, Southampton, Dublin and Cork had on Ellis Island - in fact there is more presentation boards about black Africans. Ellis island is a poor experience. Although the Statue of Liberty is great - but most Americans there who were seeing it for the first time said it wasn't up to what they expected - they thought it would be bigger There are a lot more items I could add...........so finally, I've seen it now, I wont be going back, especially when London is only 1 hour 45minutes away by train from Doncaster
Awesome, well jealous. Bedford Avenue has got to be my favourite street in the world. We got a flat on Air B&B near Crown Heights which turned out to be infested with cockroaches (and had a dildo in the cupboard), so we got a refund and moved to a hotel near the corner of Bedford and Nassau, which was totally superb. Ate at a Polish bagel place every morning, and completely fell in love with the whole area. Did you wander into the Jewish area? Extremely curious, all of a sudden you might as well be in Israel. Could go on and on about how much I loved Brooklyn as a whole, apart from Brighton Beach. An absolute horror show caricature of the Soviet Union.
Loved New York, or specifically Manhattan as I didn't go anywhere else - went in 2007 when One World Trade Center was obviously just a hole in the ground and a lot of the devastation from 9/11 was actually still visible, even nearly 6 years after the event (damaged buildings etc). Thought I'd get everything in in a week, no chance, got on the plane regretting all the stuff I hadn't done, granted I'd done some things specified in guide books that were a complete waste of time, but I can't wait to go back. Nudger - love London as a tourist, but thought New York was a totally unique kind of place, almost like being on a film set.
