I remember years back a Barnsley supporter took over the line after the referee went off injured. We were playing Oldham at Oakwell.Step forward Melvin Smart.Oldham had a player sent off for giving Melv.some abuse.I'm not sure if the player was Ricky Holden or not.
Really ? you must have a short memory. There was a game at Oakwell in 1998 when the ref was injured in the warm up and one of the opposition fans took his place in the middle. A chap called 'Willard' if I remember correctly. The only difference is that the Willard chap wasn't a qualified official.
I was here that game, Mel was a class 1 Ref on the old North East Counties league. All 4 th officials (reserve linesmen as they were back then) were local. It all changed soon after, much to my cost, coz when I reached that level, they'd done away with using local lads for league games. I managed a couple of Fa youth cup ties, and 4 th official for reserves though. You're right a about Rick Holden, Mel told me he was disappointed with the ref as he wanted Holden sent off for swearing at him. After the match as Mel lay in the bath smoking a cigar, Joe Royle burst into the refs room demanding to know why he had got Holden booked, when he was told that Mel wanted him sent off he turned about sharpish.
I remember the same many many years ago. I was standing in the old West stand and they announced that they needed someone to run the line. A guy near me volunteered and hopped over the wall. I think it was the old 3rd / 4th division days. I also remember standing in the old West stand when i guy near me kept threatening Kenny Burns (against Leeds I believe) and telling him he wanted to fight him. The guy was about 30 and his dad was encouraging him. Kenny could hear all this and turned round and motioned for him to come on the field. The guy was ready to go, but wanted his father to pay any fines he may incur, as he had paid the last one. Nothing happened. Fun days.
A few years ago we had the same situation in a game at Brentford. A London based fan offered himself to take up the task but was rejected on the grounds that he was drunk and not a qualified referee.
