This is the Barnsley squad just prior to the start of the 1977/78 season. How many can you name? Just after this photo was taken, we signed midfielder Alan Little from Southend United for a bargain £6000. He scored the opening goal in our first game of the season against Rochdale. We won 4-0, with Barry Murphy (pen.), Peter Price & Brian Joicey getting the others (so there's three clues). <img src ="http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/09/16/article-2038285-0973C4FF000005DC-811_468x358.jpg">
He only played two games for us. The first was that season in the second round of the FA Cup when we lost 2-0 at Grimsby Town. Terry Donovan (weather girl Keeley's Dad) scored both the goals. His second came the following season when we won promotion. We drew 4-4 with Stockport County and Les Bradd scored a hat trick in the last ten minutes for them after we were leading 4-1.
Macca, peachey, saunders, wigg?, Collier, Copley? Pugh, brown, collins, chambers, springett Pickering, Colin, murphy, price, miller, riley, joicey
Grimsby away was it in the cup, and the Stockport game, if I remember snow on side of pitch, Francis Lee played for Stockport and got snowballed by the fans...just wouldn't happen now would it...and yes, conceded 3 goals in the last 10 mins or so....happy days......77/78 was my first year at Leeds Uni and the first season I was able to get to most games.....
L to R from back:- McCarthy, Peachey, Saunders, Wigg?, Collier? Parry?, Pugh, Brown, Collins, Chambers, Springett Burke?, Warnock, Murphy, Price, Millar, Riley, Joicey How did I do...?
Hmmm, is must be collier or pickering. Funnly enough, a bloke i work with asked me the other day if id ever heard of gary copley, apparently he worked with him for years after he quit football. He reckons that during that period he used to reguraly get folks knocking on his door asking for autographs.
Kenny Brown.... wow. Alistar Millar, certainly a better ball player, other than Hourihane in current squad... We could do with Alan Little now.
They all look so old. How old would McCarthy have been there? 21? Looks about 30. I only recognised him, warnock and Murphy by the way.
Sad old gits we are Can remember far more about that era than I can about the last couple of years. Mind you we didn't have quite the turnover of players every season that we do now.
onemickeybutler got it correct, mate. It's Peter Burke, not Mick Pickering on the far left front row. Mick Pickering had been sold to Southampton for £35,000 earlier that Summer.
