Chester never really looked like beating us, they played well but in the end I thought we were quite comfortable. The cup always throws up some of these displays where sides raise their game.

If a decent league one side was put in the conference for a season (as an experiment) I reckon they'd win over two thirds of their games and win the league with relative ease.

I'm chuffed for you, really pleased.

Still no evidence that an experienced has-been would turn out to be a success though.

I cant see where he wants "has beens" at all ? He wanted some experience, experienced players dont have to be has beens mate. What he suggests is just what we should have gotten during the summer, we are crying out for someone that has been there and done it, rather that all the kids that are great when we are winning , but have not got a clue what to do when things start to go wrong. Beckford was a daft idea though, I will give you that one.
Even the Man utd side that had all the kids in , had a mix of older heads in there too.

I stand by what I said in the Summer. No problems with bringing in experienced players, but we have to do a damn sight better than we've done in the past few years with them.

Agreed. We appear to have, in the past and also now, signed players based purely on age and that doesn't work. That's the problem with a statistical approach. On paper nyatanga has tons of experience and should be a good leader, in reality he isn't (no problem with that though).

We have signed young players based on their age and who they play for and we have signed old players based on their age too without looking at the kind of mental attributes or general fitness that they have

It's almost as though the experience of Lita and Treacy has burnt them so badly that older more experienced players are just off of the agenda totally

Or do we not like people who stand up for themselves? Young coach, young players

I certainly wouldn't mind us signing the modern day equivalent of Ian Evans & Ray McHale, but would prefer us not to bring in another Garry O'Connor, Mido, Lita, Treacy, Pollitt, Fox or Woods.

I'd go with another harewood, hassell, Moore, Macken, grey, Scotland, or lawrence

He was 27 when he signed for us and how did we get our money back? We cancelled his contract.

I've been told that we were paid back what we paid for him in wages etc.

Summat to do with Brum not disclosing what had gone before in full

I'd have no issue with that type of player. But let's not kid ourselves that all those players were universally popular with our fans.

Is it common knowledge, or gossip?

Hardwood and Scotland had a song about them due to their popularity, hassell is one of the most popular players in the clubs history, Darren Moore was extremely popular as a squad member if not first teamer with many suggesting him for a coaching role and macken and grey were popular when they first arrived weren't they? It was only as age caught up with them that their popularity decreased.

Unless my memory is failing which it usually does

Yeah I agree with that, but therein lies the problem. I reckon we'd struggle to attract half decent early to mid 30s players who'd add something to the team, and instead get stuck with the likes of Lita, Treacy, Lawrence, Tonge etc who are after one last pay day. In recent years, for every Peter Ramage we've dropped on, we've had 3 Gary O'Connors.

Well, Hill got criticised for bring in Harewood as Marlon hadn't been offered a contract by Wednesday after training with them. Scotland's signing was criticised by some before he'd actually kicked a ball, with the claim if he wasn't good enough for Ipswich, then he wasn't good enough for us. Moore was criticised for being far too slow, as were both Macken & Gray, who never had any pace even when they were in their pomp. Hassell had some quite vociferous critics on here which were expressed on a regular basis.
As I said, I would be more than happy for us to sign similar players. But I can still remember these very same players also had their critics, too.
