Fair play to Hugo. He's paying his own way to come for a trial that might lead to nothing. How many people would be prepared to pay and travel to Argentina to do a weeks work for nothing in the hope they offer you a job?

Most people on here were not saying we need experienced heads. Yes, plenty thought we were players short, but I don't remember many banging the drum for experience pros to be brought in 'otherwise we will struggle'. Quite the opposite IIRC.

I seem to remember most saying experience was needed and arguing against the statement from PC pre season when he said league one teams don't need experience and quoted a load of stats.

Thanks mate, I was referring to the earlier statement. What was said last night is at odds with earlier communications out of the club. I wasn't saying you'd got it wrong.

there was no real call for experience at all if i remember rightly. plenty were calling for extra players and with hindsight its easy to see that we needed some old heads.

Things is, I don't think I am. In fact, I know I'm not, I'm ******* useless at it. It's just this time it was so obvious what was going to happen. It was absolutely nailed on. It took no insight from me at all and I still struggle to understand why everyone (manager, board, fans) couldn't see it before it happened.

    This IS the real issue.

I was stressing expectations shouldn't be so high in posts in August, on the basis of who we have signed, but that was not the rhetoric of the club & fans were mostly talking of us going for the playoffs.

There is clearly a danger we could go down, but I think the squad will maybe be strong enough just about to keep us up, if we get Hourihane back fit & we don't sell him in January.

Where the chuff does the money go?

Load of loans who presumably don't cost a lot, no 'big' earners left over from the Championship, and all the players we've signed have come from a lower level. I just don't get it, we need some honesty from the club - are we crippled with payments to former managers and released players or something?

I wouldn't imagine the loans are cheap.

"Hello, money-hungry, rapacious Premiership giants Manchester United. It's Barnsley here. Can we take two of your midfielders on loan at little or no cost to ourselves, please?"

"Sure. Not maximising every opportunity to squeeze the pips out of every transaction is exactly how we've had so much success over the years. We hope they do well for you."

Youth loans are often low wage contribution or no wages. They go out to develop. I've read that a few times before.

    Fair enough, then.

Maybe I'm just a cynical bugger who can't imagine a Premiership club doing anything without it resulting in a net financial gain.

We're supposed to send back a player who's developed into a senior footballer for them to use or maybe sell, ala Drinkwater, so there's the gain. I say supposed to...
