Problem is our inability/decision not to sign any players with any experience in the summer has left a team full of kids with no confidence or leadership. Everyone has now realised that this strategy that Johnson was given has failed. But now the transfer window is closed. So we can't sign anyone on a permanent deal unless they are out of contract. The only other alternative being a loan.

So we either struggle on with what we've got until January or try to bring someone in who will add experience.

I hate our use of loans. Always have. But in this instance, short of the right free agent being fit and available I absolutely think we need to bring someone in. Because until we get some on pitch leadership and communication the best manager in the world isn't going to get points on the board. Trouble is most clubs are only willing to loan out young uns, not the old heads that we need.

    Spot on

I guess what we will never know is did LJ express any concerns at the outset of this strategy

    What is the loan quota?

The biggest mistake of all wasn't signing young uns on permanent deals. That makes sense in this re-sale value idea that they've got. But we also filled our entire loan quota before the season even started, also with young uns, one of whom refused the permanent contract we offered him ffs. Would such a player be ready to bust a gut for the cause? Judge for yourselves.

There's no re-sale value in any loan deal, they're not our players, so there's no reason they have to be kids. You may argue that some of the loan deals were with a view to a permanent move, but not all of them were. We were never going to sign Crowley for instance. It also restricted any business we could do between the end of August and the beginning of January. If the young player policy didn't work (as it hasn't, as was entirely predictable), but we'd kept a few loan places open, we could have rectified the situation by bringing in a couple of experienced heads. But, as Johnson states in this latest interview, we're now hamstrung by loan quotas.

It's the biggest transfer window **** up in the history of football. It really is and it was all so predictable. (There's some great threads on this forum btw from back in July and August). I don't know how whoever was in charge of the whole fiasco is keeping their job. I really don't.

Isn't it 5 in a matchday squad? So although not ideal I'm not sure why someone else can't be brought in. We could just leave another one who isn't very good out of the squad

Trying to be my usual positive self at the time I thought the reason was that the youth loans didn't count towards the wage cap, so that we were fleshing out the squad with those players and were poised to bring in some real quality (on high wages) on permanent deals. Obviously I was being too optimistic. Although in fairness that might have been the plan and they just didn't materialise.

LJ today explained that Smith and Wilkinson are standard loans and thus can't be sent back. He also mentioned Isgrove and Harris being loans that we could have sent back but we'd still have to pay for them. Obviously, Harris is injured and has gone back now.

So how many do we have now?

Isgrove, Pearson, Wilkinson and Smith? Is that right? If so, there's room for one more.

Safe to say though, only Pearson has been anything like a successful loan. Somebody doing the recruiting is failing massively. Look at Coventry's three loans - Joe Cole, Adam Armstrong and Ryan Kent. All doing well. All scored on Tuesday night. Loans are more palatable if they're actually decent.

Ah well, looking forward to seeing this side soon:

    -------------------------------------Davies----------------------------------

    Bree-------------------Mawson----------Nyatanga------------------Smith

    ------------------------------------Colace------------------------------------
    -------------------------Hourihane-----------Scowen-------------------------

    ------------Watkins--------------Winnall--------------Hammill

    Not a loan in sight.

Agree entirely, but where we disagree perhaps is who is responsible, Ive seen some threads intimating that Johnson wasnt selecting the players or that a strategy was being used that he had little influence in, but then he's made out that hours and hours of dvds are being watching and a 'dossier' compiled before approaching and bringing a player in. No doubt there's been players he's missed out on, but I cant believe for one minute he's not had some input into selecting some of the loans. Is that the suggestion?? And the fact that too many of the loans were/are similar?? Still no left back brought in??

The current squad is the weakest squad that I can remember since we were embargoed under admin. That said, we shouldnt be in the bottom 3 of League 1, Ive seen players for opposition sides this season that wouldnt get a game down Vida on a Thursday night.

"we didn't really need Crowley, but when you're offered him, you take it"

    Bet he regrets that now.

I don't believe for a second Johnson has no input at all. However, I do question whether he is the one in charge, particularly as we employ someone with the job title 'head of recruitment'.

    Two sides to the argument

the Head of Recruitment might hold the opinion that the manager isnt getting the best out of the players he has available, some of them showed against Everton that they are capable and can when motivated raise their game, isnt it the managers job to formulate a winning side & tactics? How many different formations have we tried now? We're in November and does Johnson know his best team yet? He doesnt even know his best keeper yet!

Its a mess all round, but the bottom line is budget or no budget, no other football league or conference club would be sticking with a manager that in October and November has put together a run of 7 straight defeats. As probably the only person who can legitimately say he argued for keeping Simon Davey, I feel no remorse in saying I'd sack Johnson at the earliest possible/most convenient opportunity.
