    I'd make him captain.

He's been there and done it and gone through the highs and the lows already.

He's still got a good 10 years of his career left yet.

Give him responsibility for more than just himself.

Tell him he's the man to lead this young group through his performances.

It worked with Jacob Butterfield and I believe it could work with Hammill.

Whatever happens I'm positive this will be a good signing.

    Come on you reds!

Wouldn't look good giving the captaincy to someone on a short term contract . But I do get your point

Hourihane should be captain. Mental that he isn't. Leads by example, good communicator, experienced etc. Let Alfie concentrate on learning how to defend, especially moving quickly instead of lumbering everywhere like Lee Crooks on ketamine.

I agree that Mawson certainly isn't a good captain and also not a great player at the minute.

I think the offer of captaincy probably part the reason he chose us

Started off well enough, as did Roberts. As did Nyatanga. Defence has gone to pot since we started swapping keepers, in my opinion.

He's not doing wonderful on the pitch which is ultimately the most important thing.

Im not suggesting changing captain but there is a world of difference between leading a football team, challenging a referee and making sure players heads dont drop whilstmorganising the defence and set plays and being a great person who helps young boys get through illnesses.

Can't he do that without the armband? I like Mawson as captain, club captain, he's great off the pitch and once we sort ourselves out will be good on the pitch, he's showed us what he can do, we just need that consistency from him

Its all sports psychology. Little things like this can help players.

    It helped Jacob Butterfield massively.

He was honoured (but surprised) to be made captain. The thing that helped his career massively was a manager who believed and trusted in him.

Was it always the clubs plan to sell him Whitey? Making him captain always seemed to be more about increasing his value than being actually about what was best for the team at the time. He was only young and didn't seem to possess any captain attributes really (due to his age). In a lot of ways I think his role at Barnsley was very similar to Mawsons. Maximum exposure to generate maximum resale value
