He certainly was mate. I remember him breaking onto the scene and terrorising teams, including England. I believe he is still the highest try scorer in world cup history.
You are correct. He definitely equalled him in one game, and may have surpassed him. He retired after the RWC 2015. I was back for 2 of the RWC 2015 games at Twickenham. I remember reading how Jonah was there as a Rugby ambassador and had fallen in love with the UK, as had his family. He was talking of moving to England. I saw him in his prime several times at the Hong Kong 7s and against Australia in the Bledisloe Cup. A great player and a sad loss to the game. Illness cut his career short too.
Really sad news..a lad fortunate enough to be born with all the physical attributes to be one of the all time great players, and achieved that in a career cut short by illness...but despite the highs and lows always remained a really nice bloke....a very sad loss.
I was bumped him to him ( literally) in Liverpool in the Premier season after we had beaten Liverpool me and Gordon Ottershaw went into a pub in Liverpool and the NZ rugby team were there took me about a millisecond to apologise then about 5 minutes to walk round him he was ******* huge. Brilliant to watch and sadly missed.
He put Rugby Union on the map for thereev, who never really bothered with it before. Awesome player Rip
