Anyone know if they are wild around the area? Nearly hit one tonight between Pilley and Wortley. Just wondered if it had escaped from the Deer Farm.

Wild deer can sometimes be found in the fields leaving Staincross along Staincross Common up to Woolley Edge.

Not yer classic stag. More like a sheared sheep.

There are wild deer in the area but they are very shy creatures and tend to keep out of the public domain.

I could elaborate but I will leave it at that

There are loads of wild deer around this area. My mother woke up one morning last summer to find muntjac deer on the front lawn.

I've seen several deer in the same area as you, usually at night.

Muntjac deer were quite common where I used to live (in Princes Risborough). Often saw them grazing by the roadside on early morning drives.

Hit a much larger animal one morning not far from Luton airport. It was just getting light and thus thing shot into the road and got hit by a car coming towards me and that impact flung it into the side of my Merc. Did considerable damage to my car. He didn't survive, needless to say. Quite a shock when that happens

Apparently they escaped from Woburn Abbey so they are probably more numerous that way and established themselves much sooner.

Yes I heard about that. Surprised they have got this far north though. Very shy little animals so we are lucky to see them at all

You ever tried any? It was amusing the other week on Karl Pilkington's Moaning Of Life him being in Canada and a guy preparing roadkill of Squirrel and Fox for him to try. Skinned, popped in frying pan, seasoned and cooked. Karl wasn't so sure but in the end enjoyed the squirrel and was eating it like a chicken drumstick and licking his fingers. Made the good point that we generally in the UK eat five meats but with seven days in a week we could do with a few more to try.

I get from Penistone some Buffalo burgers which are really nice. Wild Boar isn't bad either as it just tastes like a pork sausage but done in the shape of a burger.

After I had killed a deer near Luton a few years ago lots of my passengers that I told about it afterwards asked if I had gone back to pick it up for a nice venison haul. Seems like it is normal around there to pick them up and get them off to the butchers. Not sure what the legality of that is but the thought never crossed my mind.

I was just so shocked having had a big animal smashing into the side of my car. Apart from that the road was far too busy to contemplate going back and scooping it up from the middle of the road. No doubt somebody did though.

Provided it is killed accidentally it is legal to take it and eat it. You are not allowed to sell it though. Some people believe that only the person involved with the incident that kills the animal have the right to take it but that's not strictly true. There is a doubt though whether a person that comes to the dead animal later can genuinely state the death was caused accidentally.

There's loads. Go to Wentworth Castle (Stainborough) and there are herds of them.

Yeah it's a strange one for what to do. Leave a dead animal in the road to rot and for others to see, but not have to deal with it. Or take it home for some food.
