I used to know Lobby when I was younger, he was pally with my dad. I'll be paying my respects on the 7th minute.

    RIP Lobby.

Not as silly as using the word "gotten".

    Are you American?

    I won't be applauding.

His sort would kick my foreign girlfriend out if they ever got any traction.

I don't join in with the applause, ever. I definitely won't be tomorrow.

Why would I applaud the life of a BNP activist who was a member of the Barnsley five-o hooligan gang?

It's each to their own though isn't it, mate?

So, on that basis, give it a rest with the preaching. If you're not going to join in on the 7th minute, fine, I have no problem with that. But others will do for various reasons, surely you can respect that at least?

FTR, not that I think I need to say this, but I don't condone hooliganism and the BNP do not represent me politically. But because I knew of Ian and he was never anything but a lovely bloke to me, I'll pay my respects tomorrow.

I just feel that it's not only fair but quite important that when there is a campaign for a minutes applause backed by the local newspaper that people are aware of who they are applauding as I'm sure quite a large number would join in blindly out of respect but how many of them would if they knew?

So now we have to do background checks on folk before deciding if the life of a fellow Barnsley fan is worth showing respect for? Someone who was obviously suffering mentally to take their own life.

Perhaps that shows how stupid it is that we are having them every other week for people we know **** all about. For people who in all honesty we think are tossers but without realising it we have applauded them. **** that

Agree with you on the shrines. Re. the clapping, I wonder how many fans die during the season but whose family did nor publicise that they were supporters of a football club?

I don't think I normally use (m)any words or phrases from American English, but for some reason I'm also quite tempted to use the word "gotten" sometimes. It just sounds somehow better... Then again I'm not a native English speaker so it's probably different for you. Anyway, I think that there are much more serious language crimes that people commit.
