Much to enjoy today, still areas of improvement

I'll get the bad out of the way - we conceded two goals in similar fashion, winger or full back took the ball to the byeline, crossed and put away from close range in the centre of goal.

We can sort this, full backs maybe needed more help from their wingers and or nearest centre back, work in it this week and cut out the delivery.

On to the good stuff.

Commitment - some players who have been criticised this season for being a bit powder puff, not going in for 50/50s or lacking commitment to the team showed today what they can do. Hourihane was immense in centre midfield in the part of his game that is his weakest, he challenged for everything, was happy to go for 50 50 high balls, put his shoulder in, out muscle his opponent.

Discipline - on the whole it was a good disciplined game from the whole team today, on so many occasions Wigan were on the attack and found every approach covered, no where to go, passed sideways and then backwards and then lost control of the ball.

Better decision making - When we needed to stick it into row Z we did so, when it was possible to play a quick ball up front it was delivered quickly and with accuracy - special mention to Reece Wabara and Ben Pearson on this.

Following in - Toney got his goal by following in Hourhanes shot and got his just reward.

There were plenty of good passing moves, that could have ended in goals if we had had a bit more coolness in front of goal.

Man of the Match for me - either Ivan Toney or Ben Pearson - covered miles of ground today in attack and defence.

Special mentions - Hammill, Hourihane and Winnall oh and the travelling fans - what a noise they made.

Toney and Winnall look a good pairing. Marley wasn't great today, not through lack of effort, but he's much better there than he is up front. Get a quality centre half and left back in and we'll be good.

 

Said this should be tried when I saw Toney play against York. They've got obvious complementary skills and worked well together.

 

Marley looked a bit short on confidence, couple of times he could have shot on goal he passed it. It will come if we keep him in the side.

 

According to our man in Sheffield Towers Winnall was playing in midfield

But, then again, he called him Scott Winnall once and then called one of our other players by the wrong name (forget who). Tried not to let his poor commentary spoil a great win.
