The 50,000 are probably the same type as the students who seemingly were carrying placards around the streets in support of any ridiculous cause as an excuse to skip lectures when I was at Polytechnic. Not surprisingly they seemed to all be art students and not science and engineering. It's still happening now where you see the same faces in demonstrations today, professional demonstrators and always complaining about this and that. Now the 50,000 want to try and take sportsperson of the year away from the only heavyweight champion we have had for decades. I remember as a boy on my paper round reading the headlines of our Henry knocking down Ali, bloodied face and all, but he became a national hero for that. Duty has done much more than that and should be recognised for it, irrespective of him upsetting a few Nancy's. Sorry, went a bit off track there

I couldn't give less of a toss about boxing but I hope he wins just to wind up the wet blankets "offended" by him

Not as bad as the current one with this clown reigning as champion, even if it is only for a few months.

He fought a far better, younger Wlad.

Aye, I've noticed Wlad's apparently shot now. Which nobody said before Tyson beat him easily.

So someone has actually taken the time to set up an online petition to try to get a newly crowned champion boxer removed from an essentially meaningless TV sports prize-giving ceremony, simply because he holds some opinions which differ from their own. It’s hard to know whether that’s the most pathetic thing I’ve heard all year, or something more sinister. Perhaps it’s both. As for those that have given this nonsense supposed legitimacy by signing it, isn’t that just further proof (as if it were needed) of how many worthless, emotionally immature tw*ts there are skulking around on social media.

I couldn’t care less what Tyson Fury’s opinions are on anything, as I don’t have to share them, and can ignore them if I find them offensive etc. You know, like grown-ups do. While I’m no fan of the man, and he’s obviously a few pence shy of a pound, it was great to see his response today was a great big ‘F*ck You’ to all those involved. It’s always nice to see someone in the public eye willing to stand by their views, and stand up to these self-appointed commissars of public opinion who are so very unrepresentative of the majority, yet who, due to their seemingly incessant whining, constantly hijack/bully the discourse in this country.

The only surprise is that the Beeb hasn’t dropped him yet, given that their adherence to the new religions is likely to mean they strongly agree with the silly petitioners, and the way they usually rubbish anything that doesn’t fit their own unrepresentative world-view. Perhaps they’re applying pressure as we speak through his people, and we will soon see him ‘recant’.

^^^this^^^. If people are so bothered about his views then don't vote for him; simple.

There is a difference between coming out with these homophobic and misogynistic views (even if he later pretends to retract them) and a publicly-funded national broadcaster giving him the oxygen of further publicity in a contest which mentions the word 'personality'. That's why I'm very happy to sign this petition. If we can keep this thread up near the top of the leaderboard, maybe the more rational on here will do so too. 82,000 and counting!

Happy to help. Think it's 85000 who've confirmed their irrelevance and intolerance now, as far as I'm aware.

I'm as surprised as you probably are that the Beeb haven't found a way to shaft him yet, given that, like the sorry lot that have signed this petition, they too are normally a set of politically correct fascists fixated on prohibiting views or opinions that don't concur with their own.

Who knows, maybe they are finally coming to understand that they are supposed to represent all views, not just those of the narrow minded censorious PC minority that bleats the loudest at times like this, and it's not their role (nor anyone else's for that matter) to censor opinion?

Perhaps they've also worked out that the remaining 99.9% of the UK population (most of whom also pay the license fee) - hey, I know, let's call them the irrational majority - haven't felt exercised enough by Fury's views to sign this ridiculous petition, and most likely couldn't give a flying f*ck what he thinks?

Nah, doubt it, most likely they're currently working out how they can drop him without alienating the huge number of people who are fans of his or boxing in general, and/or take a similarly unreconstructed view regarding women and certain 'lifestyles'. Either that or they're planning to put him on the spot on the night, in an attempt to embarrass him - he might be quite an easy mark. Wouldn't put it past them to have Graham Norton co-hosting with Claire Balding, just so they can make him feel as uncomfortable as possible.

I'll be voting for Fury anyway. I wrote him off, didn't think he could pull off the upset as did most.

Compare him to Murray who won a Davis Cup that none of the other top tennis players took part in. The equivalent of winning a World Cup without Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Italy & Germany.

And Hamilton who was in a dominant car & his main rival was his team mate.

The BBC can't remove him from the list because they gave Muhammad Ali sports person of the 20th century. What Fury's said is a drop in the ocean compared to what Ali used to come out with. It'd be hypocrisy.

And if there's a petition to take anyone off that list it should be Mo Farah.

Farah was an also ran at international level in his mid-20's before he started training with Salazar in America. Since then at the 5 & 10k at the world's in 2011, 13 & 15 plus the Olympics in 2012 Mo has won 7 golds & 1 silver, he's become unbeatable & is claimed by some to be our greatest ever athlete. Aged 30 Mo ran a 3.28 1500m, making him the 8th fastest man in history in an event he doesn't even train for!

Farah's coach has a proven history of doping his athletes, from thyroid meds & super strength asthma inhalers up to steroids. He justified the use of EPO & growth hormone at a lecture before he he was hired by Nike to run their long distance Oregon project.

He was nearly banned before London 2012 when he missed 2 random tests & one of them was at his home, but he 'didn't hear them knocking.'

Seb Coe also sponsored by Nike up until a few days ago saw it fit not to investigate Farah & Salazar who train at the Nike project. You couldn't make it up.
