Yeah I remember when it was all happening mate . It was really all hush/hush.Possibly gonna be a shock announcement after everything was done and dusted.

At the time the local press, who support Dundee BTW, had Dundee taking over United. So this revelation is a bit of a surprise. Puts the wee team back in their place.
But I best not get too smug as we are having a right torrid time of it ATM. I'll not have too much to shout about if we get relegated.

    Yeah glad it didna happen.

i can imagine, there was loose talk of mergers in england, cant see it ever happening although some ground share ideas arent too far off really.

Ground shares are one thing mate. And not acceptable to many. But club mergers are a big no-no although Inverness Caledonian and Inverness Thistle managed it about 20 years ago. Although I did once speak to a Cally fan in Inverness who hasn't been back since that day.

If my club was ever to merge I certainly would not feel the same for it. Possibly never go back.

How would you feel if Barnsley merged with Rotherham? Could you ever support that team?

as long as they called it barnsley and played at oakwell :)

would there ever be one ground in dundee, i've always thought with the grounds being so close its bonkers having 2 ! i know club loyalty is everything though and no club would ever budge first!

Whats the difference mate. If either club had grounds at opposite ends of the city we would not be having this conversation. Its only because we share a street that it all seems so unreal. Anyway both clubs have very deep histories and neither set of fans would be happy giving over to the other.

We might only be 30 yards apart but in reality we are 30 light years apart.

TBH mate we have a synthetic training park also in Tannadice Street. At one point in history this was the home ground of another Dundee team. Dundee Wanderers I think but could be wrong. Anyway there is 3 football pitches in Tannadice street. And not a lot of people know that.

One brand new football stadium would possibly be the best ground sharing option but who is gonna pay for it. Won't be the clubs. FFS Scottish football is on its knees.

Pompey here is a picture of all three grounds. BTW Dens has been updated since that picture was taken. Now have two modern stands behind each goal.

Yes. I've no idea how many times but I do remember 1 occasion, late 60s or early 70s Scottish Cup. Both Dundee teams playing at home. If I remember correctly we kicked off an hour early. Think we might have been playing Hamilton and Dundee were at home to Either Rangers or Hearts. Can't remember but it was a big game.
No chance of this ever happening again.

Donny Tyke I did a wee bit of digging and the occasion I'm talking about was from January 1976 (later than I thought)
Both teams played at home on the same day. I was correct with United. It was United 4 Hamilton 0 but Dundee were playing Falkirk who beat Dundee 2-1.
Falkirk were a much bigger club in these days and carried a good support. No idea where I got Rangers and Hearts from.

Obvious candidates to merge in my opinion would be:

    Bristol clubs
    Nottingham clubs
    Sheffield clubs

Three massive clubs formed that would likely make an impact on world football.
Just imagine one successful Sheffield club that is always near the top of the Premiership - yer looking at 60 to 100 thousand for every home match
If you don't believe that - the last time they played each other in a stadium that could hold most of their fans they filled it - Wembley

As they stand I think they will always struggle

I see your logic Nudge but it doesn't always follow. Leeds, Cardiff and Hull are all very sizeable one club cities, none of which have set the football world alight in recent years, if ever. Granted, there's the influence of rugby, but even so.
