Our supposed star players. Winnall looks utterly out of his depth in this league. No physical presence, no pace, and on the evidence of the very clear chance that fell to him in the second half, not much of a finisher. I say this with due respect to his effort. But his limitations have been there for all to see this season. Hourihane has little influence on open play. His delivery today (supposedly his strongest asset) was abject. And to make him captain was laughable, given his negligible effect on his team's efforts. The notion that some club would pay a large fee for him is ridiculous. If these two are the best we've got, then we're in deep do-do.
They were good last season and have been at times this season. We all know the real reason were in **** and can't blame them two
20 goals in 60 appearances, Winnall. 7 this season. That's 4 more than of our other 4 strikers combined. He's not happy playing for this wally, it's as blatant as the nose on Jim McNulty's face. Hourihane has just scored 4 in 4, created 3 in that spell too. He's got 31 assists in 18 months at the club and 20 goals in 60 appearances. But yep, both aren't good enough at this level.... Jesus wept. The manager is useless. And we do have some average laikers. But Winnall and Hourihane???? Proper ******* LOL. However, each to their own and all opinions are appreciated.
Fetch in Digby or Abbott and play Jackson (who we've no idea if he's any good) up front on his own..that'll solve it.
Can't agree with any of that. They both had a very poor game today, fair enough. Take Hourihanes goals and assists, and Winnalls goals out of this team and look where we would be then!! These two would get into most if not all league one starting elevens every week
Winnall was very poor today and has looked pretty average for most of the season and doesn't look fully fit. I don't buy the theory that he doesn't want to play for Johnson. Would go down a long way in my estimation if that was true. Hourihane was anonymous today and his delivery from set pieces was disappointing. I think these two are overrated by many, although I agree statistics suggest that Hourihane makes a vital contribution. A goal every 3 games for Winnall is decent but doesn't necessarily put him in the bracket of best strikers in this league. Our predicament means we need the so called big players and those with experience to step up, today they didn't. Nyatanga, Winnall and Hourihane all had poor games.
Hourihane is more than good enough but is a player who needs a midfield built around his needs and attributes. LJ has thus far failed to find a combination that gets the best out of him. But you cannot deny his contribution, just look at the stats for evidence. I think Winnall is a slightly overhyped but still more than capable goalscorer at this level. The problem is we give him absolutely no service week on week. When he finally does get a sniff of goal like today, he's snatching at chances. Again, it's LJ who needs to find a way to get the best out of a striker I'd expect to bang in 15-20 goals.
Agree andytyke Winnall was absolute ***** today but it's not all his fault. Get rid of Johnson and another manager potentially may extract more from the ability which he has.
Hourihane has been excellent recently but poor yesterday. Winnall is struggling for form and looks like he doesn't want to play for Johnson (and who could blame him). Problem is an out of form disinterested Winnall has scored more goals than the rest of our 'strikers' put together.
Lets not judge based on one performance either, overall these two are good players at this level and as previous posters note the tactics do not do them many favours. I can remember someone last year commenting (on here) when we played Port Vale at home last season and slagging Pope off...........it was his first game for 8 weeks!! I personally cant wait for January, when we can get some players in. I reckon that will be make or break for Jonno.... its painfully obvious our recruitment lremit has spectacularly failed....did Jonno want more experience? dunno but I reckon he will get his chance to prove his worth (in the transfer market)until maybe Feb after players have come and gone and I wouldn't be at all surprised if Hourhiane was going anyway.
Digby wouldn't even be at oakwell if I had the choice He's useless 4 managers can't be wrong surely Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Are we seriously gunna trust Johnson to recruit players when the transfer window reopens ? Get rid and in the absence of appointing anyone externally, Let Hecky, Hassell and Burton try and get us out of this mess
