Re: What happened? Hammill shouldn't have reacted in that situation, he should've been more professional no matter how bad the abuse was. I don't condone the abusers but professional footballers have to accept that after poor performances and defeats there are going to be fans who will react with frustration and anger. Confronting them will only make things worse. Applaud the fans, get off the field and concentrate on getting a better result next week...
Re: What happened? I agree with this your always going to get nobs but hammil shouldn't be running over and having a go back. Imagine people who work in retail if they get criticised or their department they couldn't start giving the customer grief back they would be sacked.
I remember when I was young going to the match with my Dad, and we were stood next to the old tunnel where the players would enter/leave the pitch. One bloke was leaning over the railings, finger pointing, effing and blinding at Paul Futcher. Paul just looked at him and went "Oh piss off", and the guy who was slating him stopped in his tracks and turned around opened-mouthed to the other supporters, and said "Did you hear that? Did you hear that?" like he was totally offended and that Paul's reaction was completely unprovoked. My Dad and I just laughed.
Ah, a nice trip down memory lane. Irrelevant to this thread though as Hammill did not receive any abuse.
Perhaps not, but you can understand when a group of people start shouting abuse and you are the nearest player...that anyone might get the impression that it's aimed at you.
It's like the freakin school playground on here. Things happen and get said in the heat of the moment. People would be moaning if players showed no passion. Move on for gods sake... life's too short. Sent from my GT-I9195 using Tapatalk
I had a decent view of the incident. Hammill was walking up to Ponty to applaud as he normally does and a couple of lads said something to him and he reacted. He was reacting to something said rather than initiating a conflict. Didn't hear any of it, but I had a clear view from high in Ponty and saw it unfold.
Another poster on here suggests he did receive abuse. Nothing like souring relations with our best player...the future is bright! I was just watching a program on Karen Brady talking about how he she created a culture of unity on and off the field at Birmingham City which led to crowds of 6,000 turning to 30,000. Our supporters argue amongst themselves as to whether they should applaud or boo at the final whistle.
In fairness as I didn't hear anything the lads could have been having a go at the team rather than an individual. Hammill did respond to something said tho.
Re: What happened? What an utterly ludicrous thing to say!! I was on the steps between the west stand and ponty and heard a couple blokes giving Hammill dogs abuse, quite similar to what you said in your first post actually. True reds fan or not doesn't give anyone the right to personally attack the players, tell them how ***** they've played by all means, but personal attacks are bang out of order Just my opinion like
Re: What happened? Hammill reacted because he was told to shove his applause. I understand the heat of the moment, another defeat, playing ***** etc, it's not great. But folk should know better. And to give a player stick when he's coming to applaud you for supporting em....? Bit weird.
Re: What happened? F*** off Hammill you sh**cu** is what I heard a couple lads shouting, and then I saw Hammill gesturing. But mebbe he wasn't reacting to them if your mate says he was reacting to him
Re: What happened? Meanwhile your posts in this thread are the epitome of calm, level-headed behaviour. I'm going to throw this out there, our fans are awful. More and more players are leaving this club without a kind word to say about the supporters. Eventually word will get around that this is a terrible place to play football.
Re: What happened? Absolutely **** on...Only been three times this season, nowt to do with the fayre on offer (seen much worse over the years), but our "support" is negative and abusive. Keep hearing the comment "If we go down to the Fourth that's me done". Good let's get rid of the moaning, whining, boring tw&ts and return Oakwell to a decent venue to spend a Saturday afternoon.
