This week it's a bit straight, a little serious and not worth watching.
First time I've agreed with everything you've said on one of these, Andy old mate. What's happening to me?? Loved the passion, frustration, anger, confusion, cynicism, heartache. Best yet.
wonderful stuff ,merry christmas and a happy 3 points on a Saturday new year #youuuuuuuuuuuuuureeeeeeeeeeeeeds
Seasons greetings to you too YT. I do like listening these, despite not always sharing opinions on players , managers etc I shud imagine most fans nod in agreement with a lot that's said and are all feeling frustrated one minute and couldn`t give a toss the next cos that's how it gets yer. Keep em coming. I would say its best thing on here but I dunt want Bob gerrin titty lip on or thi head to grow any bigger.
I don't. I think they ought to have more pressing issues than listening to me talk **** for 20 minutes.
There you go, that's more like your normal gibberish, old mate! Oh, and don't forget to say how much we've improved the quality of our central defenders since we got shut of him!
Defending? What's that? Night pal. Hope your Xmas is as good as I expect mine to be. Football isn't everything. Honest.
"Whoever dreamed up this masterplan in February wants a good fcukin shoeing" Lol. Never a truer word spoken.
Ta very much for that Mr White - you strike a chord with me, if not with many more of us, youuuuuuuuuuuu reheads
The best one yet Andy, I really enjoyed listening and unlike the football it entertained me. Happy Xmas button moon 'ead.
Some excellent points there. You'd think the club would be listening and responding to committed (if somewhat vocal) supporters when such dissatisfaction is being expressed. But I think this communication thing only counts if you're tuning in on their preferred wavelength. Was it me, or did that "Yooooo Reeedddddsss!" seem just a little less wholehearted this week?
Good listen Mr Whitey as per Have a good en and all the best for Christmas! Hope santa brings you what you aspire to
I have started this post a couple of times. My instinct tells me not to be critical, but my character buts in and insists that I should tell it like it is. I prefer it when your "Not a Podcast" does not take itself too seriously, when it does not become too analytical, because when it does, it brings out the instinct in me to debate the things that I do not agree with. On the whole, I would prefer to listen to "Not a Podcast" and not feel that way. However, I must yield to my basic instincts, I'm afraid. You made a record of things said by various people in the past. Now we all make statements, that are shown in hindsight to be misguided, ill judged or simply wrong. That does not mean to say that we did not believe in what we were saying at the time, or that we did not intend for those statements to come to fruition. Sometimes we say different things to different groups of people, because we are saying what we think they want to hear. Sometimes we say things in hope rather than in expectation because of the effect that we hope it will have on the listener. Sometimes we simply say things that we believe at the time, only to change our minds at a later date. Every day, we hear things said by other people, and we have to decide whether we believe what we are hearing and what we intend to do about it. Personally, I rely more on what people do rather than what people say, and I think that most people are the same. If you accept what someone says, you do so because it is in your interest to accept it. There is no-one to blame but yourself if it later proves to be incorrect. Consequently, if you have accepted what Ben Mansford, or Patrick Cryne or Lee Johnson has said, and it has turned out to be incorrect, you have no-one that you can hold responsible but yourself. Having said all that, let us now look at the actions of the afore mentioned trio for clues as to what is going on at BFC. There is no doubt that Patrick Cryne's tenure of ownership has not been a success. When he took on the role of saviour, he did so with no intention of being the clubs permanent owner. He wanted simply to set it on its feet, ensure that it did not fall into the wrong hands and ensure that it did not end up in the same mess again. He made an initial investment and managed to get us back in the second tier. He should have gone then because everyone would have respected him for ever, and if he could have found anyone to continue his work, I think that he would have done. He did not leave, but instead, he began the search for a business plan that would allow the club to become self financing, and to stand on it own two feet. That search has continued to the present day. It is characterised by changes in strategy and by bursts of investment that are designed to support the new strategy. Changes in team manager, and indeed the job title and responsibilities of the guy in that job have often been but one sign of the changes in strategy. For example, Mark Robins was dropped because the strategy changed from one of investment in proven quality to buy cheap, develop and sell on. It was not Keith Hill's strategy. He was simply a guy they found who they thought could be successful with it. I suspect that Danny Wilson was dropped because Cryne wanted to remove some of his responsibilities and Danny did not agree. Lee Johnson was happy to come to Barnsley on that basis because he was more likely to see success than he was at Oldham. Some managers have been allowed better budgets, not because Cryne favoured them, but more because a different strategy was being tried. For example, Simon Davey was given a better budget because, at the time, Cryne was convinced that the answer to the longer term survival of the club was to invest in order to achieve a stable mid-table position. All of these strategies failed, either because it was costing him too much and he ran out of patience, or because under-investment in players had led to a relegation battle. Small signs of success led to a change in strategy that was followed to extremes, hence we have the current investment in youth strategy that has led to a team that is not balanced by age profile. All these things are signs of changes of direction which can be read with the benefit of hindsight. In a sense, all of the team managers during Cryne's reign have been caught up in these changes in strategy, and changes in the rates of investment resulting therefrom. The fans judge managers only on results and league positions. They have no interest in board decisions, strategy, investment and Profit and Loss Accounts. If results are bad, there is no-one to blame but the guy who picks the team. But it really is not as straight forward as that. I think that we have had a lot of good guys in the managerial hot seat at Oakwell, and not just Danny Wilson, the example you quote in your piece. However, when the Brown Smelly Stuff hits the Air Circulation Device, the board is only too happy to write off each one as they search for the latest change in strategy. They are like gold miners panning for a lucky strike. The more strategies they try, the better chance they have of finding a good un. Do not get me wrong. I do not blame Patrick Cryne. The club must find a way of becoming self sufficient. It really is the only way forward. However, I do blame him for the constant changes in strategy and the constant changes of manager. The club is desperate for stability. It is desperate for a long term manager and a long term strategy. How is this for an idea. Stop tinkering and stay with the present manager and present strategy for 5 years. And make the next investment in players the last.... ever. If the fans chose to walk away from the club, and the club fails as a result, then it is the fault of the fans and not the fault of Patrick Cryne.
