I work for two massive companies. They are both an absolute ducking shambles and not efficient at all

All that matters is promises made to investors.

The BBC is just in a different league to other broadcasters. I for one would happily pay the licence fee just for BBC radio 4. But then I am a middle class academic snob.

As it happens I am currently involved in trying to secure funding in the private sector to make a TV documentary series based on my recent book. Its almost impossible to get things like this funded by a commercial company. The Australian set up involved need backers from several national stations before it becomes viable. So you are not going to see me on the telly any time soon. The point is, for this reason most of the stuff on telly is light weight commercial fluff, while the BBC still puts out world class material that we should be proud of.

It grips my **** that people say the Royal family are good value for money, but bemoan the BBC?

I see much more value out of the BBC than I see from the country's biggest family of benefit spongers and I know where I'd like to save money first.

As for getting rid of the BBC so that we have to watch football on ITV, you're having a laugh. I'd rather have a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. So what's the alternative? Sky and Rupert Murdoch? I'm quite convinced that he has enough market share already and his political agenda is quite clear. The Sun is a dirty hateful rag and to be fair he laughed at the Leveson inquiry.

BBC documentaries are of a very high standard, and anyone who has watched any amount of TV in the US/North America would recognise the quality of drama, news coverage, and sport is very high indeed. This doesn't begin to discuss the radio contribution.

I hate this government, they want to run everything into the ground so that their friends can benefit, and by proxy they can stuff money into their own wallets and dig themselves deeper into power. At the moment they're basically busy rigging democracy.

    So they're not covering F1? F1 is ***** anyway.

That's complete ********. You might argue they're given too much but they're not benefit spongers, they do a hell of a lot of work around the world which I don't envy them for. They bring a hell of a lot into this country that's undeniable.

As someone who works in a University now, I think it's worth noting that we're more private sector than ever these days.
Students borrow the funding from loan books looked after by the financial services sector, then they pay it to the university of their choice in a very very competitive market.
Central govt funding pales into insignificance compared to that fee income.

The point that is missed in this thread is that like Universities, the BBC generates huge export revenue for the UK and commissions programmes from a growing and successful roster of private sector programme makers. BBC programmes are licensed and remade in every corner of the globe - Strictly being a case in point.

People are quick to knock the public sector because they see them as a cost to the nation, but it's not so black and white.
Lots of the overseas students who study with us pay £10k fees, but then live in the UK for two years, spending £50-100k in that period in our regional economies.
If we have around 1000 Chinese students a year at our University that's a £40million cash injection into the city each year and were one of the two universities in Newcastle.

Meanwhile we can find £800 billion at the drop of a hat to bail out the banks - from - er - oh yes, the tax payer. What is so Private sector about that?

Princess Beatrice and Eugene or whatever their names are do **** all for starters. Do they bring money in and work all over the world? Andrew spends his time with a billionaire paedophile. Edward is a useless **** that does nothing for anyone. Charles thinks that climate change has influenced international terrorism and gets access to cabinet papers (why?). I mean the list goes on. It''s an incredible myth that they bring anything into the country. In this hard nosed world you actually think anyone chooses to invest in the UK because we are one of few countries that haven't been able to shake off aristocracy? That''s what''s ******** mate. 'They do a lot for tourism' - open up all the palaces year round and see how tourism grows. Do people visit the Palace of Versaille?

Seriously when I read about that racist Prince Phillip getting £2 million pay rise (snuck that one into the last budget) and when I read about the Queen making an application for funding on a hardship grant to refurbish her houses, or the £4 million refurbishment for Kate and William''s house - my blood runs cold. They are parasites in the truest meaning of the word - no austerity for them it would seem and yet they are state funded.
