ive just been looking through some old pics of barnsley on the councils digital archive ( i know im sad).. and i came across this-old pubs of barnsley interest me this image (manor castle inn) states it was on the corner of pontefract road with junction of cheapside but for life of me i cant seem to place it .. so my questions are..what is there now so i can place exactly where it was and what was the name of other pub on right of image with the barnsley bitter sign outside...and were they both demolished in modernisation of the 70's..cheers :~)

Manor Castle wsa straight opposite Gas Nook. It was on Ponterfract Rd and a bit further down in opposite side was Needham Bros & Brown which would have been about where Zero Ice was probably stretching as far as the flyover. The other pub I think was the Corporation. That stood on the corner of the Gas Nook The nearest guess I could make is that would be somewhere near the rear ramp up to the multi storey car park.

On the immediate right across Pontefract road was the Gas Nook in which stood the Wire Trellis. On the left was the short cut called Primrose Hill to Sheffield road.
The pub on the right was the Corporation and at the top left you can just see Albert Hirst's. The three storey white building next to Hirst's was the Coop department store on Cheapside. Boots now occupy most of this area adjoining Albert St.

What is the large building behind the coop?

Does not appear to be anything of that size on this 1904 map I have

Despite having only 24 posts rather than the 50+ you specified...Van Basten is correct.
I remember reading somewhere that the Manor Castle was the headquarters of some club/group or other...but can't remember what, can anyone shed light on that.

PS has anyone any photo's of Clarkson's brewery...the Britannia brewery (latterly a cinema off Sheff. Rd) or a brewery near Dillington dog track situated where the Old peoples bungalows were built in the 50's?

Ibelieve that the Manor Castle was the host to the Royal Order of the Buffalos. It was also where AEU members used to meet to pay their union subs.

Can remember paying union dues, AEU, at Manor Castle before it relocated to the Devonshire. Corporation Hotel was opposite. Short walk to Wire Trellis.

My Grandad was a regular in the Manor.
In the gas nook was K&R Mawby and also Pitchers wholesale fruit and veg merchants and there was a very nice fish & chips shop,as well as a leather shop that used to repair shoes, saddles and anything else leather.
