If you read the thread on here about what team they'd pick everyone had 2 up front. Why? Because we all know Sam Winnall isn't suited to the lone striker role. It was simple Pearson gets replaced by Abbott or Bree & Watkins by Fletcher. 2 necessary changes but at least you stick with the same formation that the other 9 players have been used to these past few weeks. But what does Johnson do? Goes 4-5-1. It meant Winnall who's strength isn't holding the ball up, was isolated up front & our only outlet was going to be a bit of magic from Hammill on the wing who happened to be up against one of if not the best right backs in the division in the Northern Ireland regular, McLaughlin. And surprise, surprise the game changed when we went 4-4-2 & played to our strengths. Wembley could've been something to saviour from what's been a dreadful season, in fact it still could be but it'll be in spite of the manager rather than because of him. And me & many others have been questioning for months why Abbott & Digby weren't sent out on loan back in August when they'd had Pearson, Scowen, Rothwell, Crowley & Hourihane ahead of them in the pecking order & today Abbott struggled because of not playing a proper game for 8 months. Just like Digby hadn't started a game in months before the shocker he had in November. We've got to get our youngsters out on loan who aren't playing. Hearing people around me saying '17's ****', 'Abbott's ****' etc isn't fair on the lad. Not played for 8 months & having to come back into the team on a mud bath is hard enough for quality, experienced players never mind a 19 year old kid trying to break through.
williams was terrible. he had 3 shots that if you added up in distance would have equated to 10 feet. The whole team lacks confidence and quality on the ball. when are we ever in our history going to get a better chance of going to wembley and we played like that. gutted
Tried not to mention Williams because I'm not sure what he's like fitness like but I was one of the few who's never been convinced by him. Makes a lot of good runs & is entertaining to watch but I've never seen much end product from him
Agree but I'm certain there would've been clubs in for him. He went to conference level Chester & performed very well last season.
