I'm not an LJ boo boy. But with us in desperate need of a striker I was interested to see what the chances were of LJ picking a decent one out. It's woeful reading made slightly better by a purple patch from a previously poor Jonathan Forte. I suppose LJ should get credit for getting the best out of him. Danny Philliskirk and possibly JCH his only other reasonable goal scoring signing out of the remaining 16. And they are pushing it. Unless we're counting Fletcher. One things for sure I wouldnt be confident in giving him £200k-£400k to bring a new one in. Try before you buy again it seems.
I think it is because he has no idea. The stats show exactly that. His phylosphies do not work, hence these strikers are not backed up with the correct plans of play to help them. Take Winnall for instance, without Hammill we would be dead. It would be nice if we had stats for defenders and midfielders and their ratings under his management. He will plod on supported by our board, and we will plod on around mid table until he is sacked
I wouldn't give him Monopoly money. Its more of a try and if he is any good, some other club will take note as well as taking them off our hands , kind of policy. If they are Carp like Mr Wilko then we get lumbered with them
Surely a striker is only any good (at this level) when he's being provided with plenty of opportunity to score? If we are giving people 1 chance a game it's not wonder they don't bag 30 goals a season. Jamie Vardy only scored 5 in 36 apps last year. Did that make him rubbish, not effective or not worth a place in the Leicester team? Course not. You can use stats to manipulate any argument either way.

If I just picked out Forte then LJ would have had great stats from the strikers he has signed. I've picked out 19 signings there and most have proved to be poor. It is also LJ's responsibility to get the team playing in a way to suit the striker he has signed. If our strikers are only getting one chance per game then surely that is down to LJ.

Good point regarding tactics but again slightly flawed. Surely LJ can only work with players we can afford or want to play here? That significantly lowers the standard and the pool of prospective signings. The strikers are playing in this division because they are either not good enough to play at a higher level eg Jabo or are cutting their teeth like Toney on loan. The latter take time to adapt to man's football. Toney looked far better in his last 3 games than his first 3 when he was match fit and realised he could do it in a man's league. I agree the goals ratio is poor. I don't fully agree that Johnson is solely to blame.
The main point I'm trying to make is. In this transfer window are we likely to sign a striker who will get 10 plus goals before the end of the season? Whether that be a player with a great record who continues to scores goals, a player who has struggled but LJ feels he could get amoungst the goals (a Forte) or a player from the Premier league or lower leagues whos looking to prove themselves. The stats suggest LJ will struggle to find that man.
Right now we should be an attractive proposition for a striker because we've got Adam Hammill on the wing supplying the chances but for 3 months of the season we played a dreadful, negative brand of football that meant strikers wouldn't score goals. Lewandowski would've struggled down at Oakwell in September - November
Flawed argument Off the top of my head.. 1. some strikers played in the same games 2. more than one person is allowed to score in a game other than Real Madrid (Ronaldo) every team would look sh*t based on your statistics
There's different types of strikers, some who score more goals than others. The one constant has been Winnall who is the type of player who can instinctively finish, plays on the last man, fox in the box type. Those listed above a more target man type players who hold the ball up and bring others into play. They've been recruited to play alongside Winnall. They're not going to score loads of goals and their performance and effectiveness shouldn't just be judged on their goalscoring record. Another point is you can't count Smith's 30 second sub cameo as an appearance and then say that he only scores 1 goal every 12 games. You should do it on a minutes per goal basis. How many starts have they actually had? I bet it's less than half of the 53 games you state. Not saying any of those strikers have been successful but 'statistically' those figures can't be 'best used' as they are very misleading.
I understand you didn't include Winnall because he's not one of his signings, but the point remains if Winnall scores another of the strikers on the list may not have been given that chance in that game. I'd also like to see historic figures for each BFC manager compared with LJ's (including the strikers he didn't sign so you can't skew the results) I suspect its only really been any better in periods with prolific strikers ie Ward, Dyer, COG to an extent etc Also doesn't help when the top scorer last year was a midfielder I suppose

It's upto LJ how he uses his signings. He's still signing the players and they still cost money whether he plays them for 10 minutes or 90. The reason they haven't played is because after signing them he's either not had faith in them or realised they are not very good. You judge a striker mostly on their goals and LJ signings dont get many. As Barnsley fans we are able to add performances to the stats. We know that only Ibehre and possible Toney contributed to the team positively on a reasonably consistent basis.
