I jumped on the bandwagon back in 1979 when we we starting out on our return to the second tier. Possibly one of the best eras and players we've had?? Anyway, was tidying the loft out and came across some old programmes of which one was the last home game of the Division 3 to 2 promotion campaign. Just thought this picture will refresh us all and remind us of happier times .

Ah, a 4-1 victory over a Newport County team who'd reached the quarter finals of that season's European Cup Winners' Cup. Derrick Parker and Ronnie Glavin, with a second half hat trick, were our scorers.
Weren't we vying with Rovrum to be champions - didn't we have to win by 4 clear goals & Rovrum lose - seem to recall (rightly or wrongly) that we indeed were winning 4-0 & rovrum were losing - but then both County (scoring) & Rovrum (equalising) spoiled it.......................ah well happy daze...........literally
Funny how certain things stick in your mind from games years ago. 1) It was the first and only time I have run onto the pitch after the match (think it was encouraged rather than frowned upon back then). 2) A very old Welsh man in a trench coat and a Newport County bag (with his flask and sarnies) stood behind me on the corner of the Ponty. Just thought I'd share that. 25p for a Program????? Mansford out.
Didn't Sheff United get relegated to the 4th Division that day? Missed a late penalty that would have kept them up I think. Great days!!
I think that this is the only programme from that era that I possess. From memory was John Aldridge playing for them?
The pitch was lined with fans for the last few minuites, whistle blew for a free kick or something and fans on pitch, only to have to return to the sidelines again........we had gained promotion on the Tuesday night beating Rotherham after having lost away at Blackpool on the Saturday if memory serves me......Blackpool were already relegated, we needed to draw to guarantee promotion and we lost 1-0..i was so pissed that day I accidently went into the Blackpool end, which had been taken over thankfully by Reds fans.....it was the day the M62 had been closed and fans had to make massive detours to get to Blackpool, I had hitched in from Preston...............great days.............
Thats just reminded me That someone I know has Home video footage of this game up in his loft. Its in a long lost format by the way but I said I'd look into getting it converted.
