I was walking my Border Collie a couple of hours ago and was listening to the radio. A distraught caller was on saying that he'd had enough, he was finished and couldn't take any more of watching the football he was being FORCED to watch as a season ticked holder. When pressed further the caller said he'd lost faith with the Chairman and Board of his Club. He said he felt that the Chairman had one, and only one, football plan, despite the fact that he never attended any games. His, plan was to buy and nurture youngsters cheaply and then sell them on at a profit. This Chairman didn't care whether the team won or lost as he was, only running the club as a business. The caller said he couldn't take any more. He was finished. I didn't get the name of the Club but I think it was Charlton. It got me thinking. Obviously there are parallels here with our own club. I'm not saying for a minute that Patrick Cryne doesn't care or that he's not interested in whether we win or lose. I don't believe that for a minute. However, having said that , it's still got me thinking. As fans, our hearts rule our heads. This alone makes us care passionately about every aspect of our club. To us it's not a business, it's a way of life, following our club and caring what happens and the winning, drawing or losing are all part and parcel of this. When does a club become a "Business?" It never will for a fan. This new 'Business Plan' - buying, nurturing and playing youngsters on the pitch at the expense of seasoned professionals and which is being pursued by many clubs is not going to work. It doesn't work on the pitch and it doesn't work in the hearts and minds of the fans. The fans are the lifeblood of every club. Without the fans there is no club. To test the fans' loyalty, commitment and love for their club at the expense of a cheap, flawed business plan is simply suicidal. Like the Charlton fan, you can only take so much. We are witnessing this now at our own club. It's impossible for us to see the Club as a Business because we are FANS! It's impossible for us not to care. It's impossible for us not to want to see us win It's impossible for us not to feel emotional It's impossible for us not to feel abandoned or disregarded as fans. It's impossible not to hurt. So, where do we go from here?
L.MAO Obviously need to get back up to speed with the innuendos. Just repeating what the guy said ... Memo Check for ulterior meanings next time lol.
