I need my phone line moving into living room, the phone line we have is at the other end of the house.

do anyone know how easy it is to do this or approx how much it costs to pay for someone to do this?

You could simply just get one or more extension cables and run them under your skirting/door plates into your living room. I think you can get them at Asda or elsewhere. Should only be a few quid.

Can I ask why? There may be a cheaper/better solution.

i need a phone line next to tv so i can connect my internet to tv.

main reason is with everyone talking about these android/smart boxes people have and few people have got them at work and a few lad were talking about them at footy last sat.

one of lads has got a box with every channel ie all footy channels/ppv etc and my dads got one but they've all said you need your phone line by your tv and to be truthful just got my sky bill and im paying £80 plus a month for it for sport movies etc so if i got one of these boxes it would be allot cheaper for me

I thought that would be the case. Rather than go to the expense of running cable either round the outside or inside of the building, you should get some powerline adaptors. Have a read of this:

    http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/buying-a...ne-networking-adaptors-buying-advice-3370997/

You could then ask on here which type forum users would recommend. I've got devolo.

    http://www.devolo.com/uk/

They're good but not necessarily the cheapest.

They don't all require a hard connection, WiFi is perfectly fine for some. And as Jay said, any that do require hard connection then the power line adapters are the way to go. I have an old PC upstairs that doesn't have any wireless network cards or anything and I use power line adapters on that. One downstairs behind my router and one upstairs behind the computer with a network cable coming out of each and into the back of computer/router it works perfectly as a wired connection

They only need the phone line for the broadband but they can connect wirelessly. I've got an android box upstairs in my room and it works via the router and phone line that are downstairs next to the front door. I think most decent android boxes can connect wirelessly but it's worth checking before you buy.

On the subject of phone lines, are they really necessary these days? They are really expensive and many people hardly use them except for internet. I think people possibly just "assume" that they will have a landline and simply pay for it, in the same way that they pay for electricity, gas and water.

The monthly cost of mobile internet contracts is coming down, and the monthly cost of landline internet is going up (about £20/month or so these days). At some point it will become cost effective to use mobile internet and do away with an expensive landline.

Does anyone on here manage without a landline? I'd be interested to know as I'm moving house in September this year and the new house won't have a landline.

As you know we live on the boat and we use 3 mobile for our phones and internet. We have a MiFi unit and it works brilliantly here in Wakefield, 4 G speeds all the time. We are limited to 15 meg a month with our plan, but very rarely have we gone over that.

    thanks everyone for the messages.

so im after one of these boxes. went round to my dads last week and he showed me one hes bought and it had everything, ppv, all the footy channels (man u tv - all sky sports, 3pm kick off etc) all the movies you need (he told me he watched a perfect copy of creed and legends other day), im not after just a cheap box, I don't mind paying extra for it (as ill be cancelling sky, but can anyone recommend one (ideally id want one like a sky box where u have a planner and can tape programes if poss)

also as mentioned above ill need summit which can be used by wifi, not one that's got to be connected to internet by a cable

Do it yourself. It's easy to do, I put one in the attic for using tinternet. Run a extension from the nearest socket place your box where you want it & couple the wires.

Good point that, my 4G phone is faster than my fibre broadband, only the fact that my broadband is unlimited that keeps me paying for it, there may come a point where it's viable to ditch this and just use a 4G device.

Virgin's broadband doesn't come down the phone line, yet if you just want broadband on it's own the cheeky tw*ts basically add the cost of line rental to the package anyway. It must be about 7 years since I've had a landline plugged in.

Get a dual band router and an android box that supports 5ghz wifi. Or some power lead adapters.

Kids have android. Boxes upstairs using the 5ghz band and get 60mbs + speed. But won't even connect to the normal 2.4ghz band

    Sorted

What are the odds on GHQ monitoring this?

if you want something thats simple to use and needs no phone line then look at an amazon fire stick , i started a thread about them a week or so ago.

connects into the back of the tv and works on wifi. the interface is easy to use but its not laid out as sky would be ( im not sure if the open boxes are either)

Although I'm no expert I've been told that the boxes that connect through a sky dish are much better than the fire stick. I could be and most likely am wrong.

it seems it depends on your wifi speed. the boxes use your sky dish, so you need to have had sky at some stage i believe and a remote server (which you buy access for at around £15 - £20 a year) the fire stick runs on your own wifi and streams the chanels that way, so as long as your wifi is decent etc its only a pne off payment for the stick
