There is a big controversy over the oscars this year with many black people going mental over the fact that no black people have been nominated in the acting categories. But am I right in thinking that the only categories are best actor and actress and best supporting actor and actress? So 10 men and 10 women? In an industry that has far more white actors and actresses isnt it statistically quite likely that some years there won't be many or any black nominations? It sounds quite possible and plausible to me that the 5 best actress performances in the entire world last year could have all been white. If you HAVE to start nominating at least one black person purely because of their skin colour then that is wrong. Not seen will smith complain too much about the racially divisive black entertainment awards...
All white last year too. You couldn't find a more racist institution if you put a white hood on it. And there are 16 nominations for actors.
Haven't the actors in Django Unchained and 12 years a slave been nominated in recent years too. I really think it is all getting very silly now; I genuinely think the Oscars are awarded on merit and not on the colour of skin.
Just looking at the lead actors category you've got Leonardo DiCaprio for the revenant, a role for which he ate raw liver, slept inside an animal carcass and almost got hypothermia from the freezing river. If that doesn't deserve a nomination nothing does. Then you have matt Damon in the Martian, a film which he carried almost single handedly, any film that has one person as its sole lead with nobody to interact with will generally be looked upon favourably. Eddie remain for his role as a transgender woman which is a very hard role to play so his inclusion is hardly a surprise (Hilary s**** won for a similar role in 2001ish), Michael fassbender for Steve jobs. A great performance and no surprise. They are 4 nominations which I would have suggested before I even heard the official nominations so I don't see why anybody can argue against them really. That only leaves one more possible nomination in the whole world, now I have no idea who Bryan Cranston is and have not seen trumbo so can't really comment but ill take their word for it that it's a fantastic performance
They're just making sure that next year loads of black actors will get nominated for Oscars they don't deserve, like Halle Berry again.
Over the past 20 years the black:white ratio of winners of the "big 4" acting awards is very similar to the ratio of the population of the USA. Doesn't seem massively racist to me. I think Hispanics are probably less represented.
I completely agree. Looking at the films that were released last year and the actors in them I really don't see how the lack of black actors from this years nominations can be linked to skin colour.
To be fair I completely agree with you (this was on the tele in the dentist's surgery whilst I was waiting for my appointment - first bit of live TV I've watched in years and it had to be about this. There also happened to be me, my white husband and 5 black people in the tiny room all watching the TV, not passing comment although we probably all had our own opinions on the matter). However, is the point maybe not that black actors and actresses are not being nominated but that they are not being cast in parts worthy of nominations. Anyone of any skin colour could have played the parts you mentioned (I'm guessing here - I've not see the films) but white people were cast for them. Of course, those white people could have been better than any black actors or actresses that may have auditioned and then fair enough. Basically, I don't watch anywhere near enough films to be able to comment on this subject! It did make me laugh though that they conceded that black people have in fact been nominated, they then changed their complaint to that it wasn't in the 'main' categories.
It's just nonsense, plenty of black actors have been nominated and won oscars over recent years. Lupita nyong'o, Monique, Jennifer Hudson, Forest Whitaker, Jamie Foxx, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Geoffrey S Fletcher, Cuba Gooding Jr etc. Two fallow years is hardly evidence that the Academy have suddenly turned racist for no reason.
Simple, just get rid of any controversy by calling them the OOWO's, Oscars of White Origin. Perhaps a liittle more acceptable than say...."the Lily White" oscars.
Does anyone know who is hosting this years highly racist oscars ceremony? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
