According to their official announcement, they triggered a release clause.

I wonder if that determined the amount of compensation.

Bizarre thing to have in a managerial contract though.

Probably a tit for tat contract if true.probably not able to have a big payout if sacked on similar lines in our favour .but purely speculation all round.

If there was a release clause I wonder if it only came into play if Bristol City is the club wanting him. Given the history he (and his family) has with the club.

It makes the original appointment even more bizarre, with hindsight.

We took a chance on an unproven manager, offered him a longer contract than any other manager in recent years, but still allowed some sort of release clause into the contract that could potentially de-stabilise everything at a moment's notice.

The more I think about it, the more bizarre it is. Would love to understand the logic behind this more when the dust settles on all this. Personally, I think we've dodged a bullet on LJ, but I don't like the idea of us contracting someone on this basis going forward.

Going back to Oldham to team with John Sheridan was a suggestion I saw on Twitter earlier.

Perhaps I am being thick but where does it say about a release clause?

Sorry but theres no mention of a release clause in the article on BCFC official announcement. They thank us for our professioalism in allowing us to speak to him and subsequently appoint him.

I still don't see it. It says we gave him permission to speak to them.

It's been amended since I posted the link. The section now reads:

"The 34-year-old arrives with immediate effect, after City secured permission from Barnsley to speak to Johnson on Friday."

Previously it was "after City triggered a release clause in his contract."

I think Ben has been on the phone!
