Just been visited by my girlfriends brother in law (not a great experience) but he mentioned that it has been said that in the UK there is some dissent about allowing children to be paper boys. Now I quite understand that the UK has become a nanny state but from my own experience as a paper boy it helped make me what I am today; two hours on the bike every morning before school, cash collection on Saturday and supplements on Sunday. Please tell me this is s joke that some lily livered liberals are trying to do away with the paper boy, who is a national treasure, part of being British.

speaking as a owner of a newsagents for the last 10 years ,and currently employing 10 paperboys , there is nothing different now as to 10 yr ago, they do by law have to have a work permit this may not be granted if they are bad at school, , and not really supposed to work before 7,but no, it is still a great way of kids earning money, mine get 20 to 25 pound a week, and had same kids now for the last 3yr ,
Just to ask while this post is on here , should anyone be thinking of buying a small business, ie newsagents/convenience store please PM me, we are looking to sell up cheers

it's always good to get your views on Britain in 2016. always incredibly relevant, balanced, well informed, accurate. have you considered being an envoy, or an ambassador perhaps? i think the world needs more people like you, sharing the global vision of life in the UK today.

From the same spoon that fed him the Redskins thing, no doubt. Next up? Something about Christmas being banned in schools or summat. Fresh from the pages of the Daily Mail expats edition.

well I had a paper round as a lad

but it was the evening one. It was my first taste of work... and its done me no harm, maybe did me good for future years. I have worked for the past 43 + years, with no unemployment in that period and very little sick time. I am very proud of that. My parents encouraged me to take on a paper round, and also summer jobs ( I worked on the parks for the council many summers) . Yes they gave me pocket money but I was always encouraged to earn my way... for my pocket money I was given a few small chores to help make me understand the ethic of 'Earning' cleaning the windows, mowing the lawns, washing the cars..... has done me no harm and has given me a work ethic... perhaps the modern day society should think about it. Not advocating chimney sweeping or work houses... but to instill some pride when you have earned your money and then been able to buy summat for it.. summat that you have earned and worked for, this then gives you pride for your efforts and you look after that summat you have bought.... no matter what it is., because you have earned it... and its that simple. Also you tend to look after it a lot better and appreciate a lot more, unlike many of the spoilt brats today who expect it all on a plate.

Great post my friend, I also did the council work in the summer ever digging graves, do the youth today know this? Or are they more engrossed in the Internet? What happened to us?

LOL. If any generation in history had it all given to them on a plate, it's yours. Walk into your freely available job needing next to no qualifications. Have the state pay for everything for you - free higher education for as long as you want, family allowance for all your kids no questions asked. Huge pension pots the likes of which will never be seen again propped up by the state. Get given your house for an absolute pittance and watch it balloon in value to eye popping levels, stopping anyone from the younger generation from being able to get in. Retire at 65 or 60 dependent on your sex, if not earlier because you've already maxed out your generous pension pot.

Those of us over 30 need to wake up to how lucky we are - and people over 50 are even luckier again. Graduates from top universities, leaving 40 grand in debt, with top degrees, having to work for free in "internships" for 12 hour days to try and get something on their CV. 500 applicants for each decent grad level job. No industry to walk into if you're not an academic. No family allowance for those of us on a decent wage. No ability for young people to get on the housing ladder as decent accommodation starts at a multiple of 20 of their current wage in certain areas.

Dragon, I've no doubt you're a hard working guy and you've had to graft to get where you are. But if you think kids who are 18 nowadays have it easier than your generation in general to shape a life and a career at a decent standard of living, then I'm sorry mate, but you're kidding yourself.
