They stifled our wingers and had runners coming through from their mid-field.......and we didn't change things to try and stop it happening

They were unlucky not to score more

They were up for it - we thought it would be a breeze - we just needed to turn up to win it.
How wrong could the players have been.
Hopefully this will be a massive kick up the backside - that if you don't hit the ground running in this league you will get beaten by any team in this league.

I don't believe for a second we thought it would be breeze and only had to turn up. Hecky's pre match interview warned of what Southend were capable of. They wanted it more, stuck to a game plan and we simply had an off day which was compounded by our naiveness and missed chances.Had Conor scored the pen it could have been oh so different. All credit to Southend but to say the players thought this would be a breeze is way off the mark.

We also had chances and could have scored a few on another day so its not as bad as you and others are making out.
Southend played well and full marks to them and their game plan but we did have chances it wasn't a drubbing by any means.
The big test is how we respond in next couple of games .
Its wasn't a case of us underestimating them IMO sometimes you have to credit the opposition but we also had chances and on another day?
No need for despair by anymeans

    totally agree with you Marlon

this is a test of the teams resolve, hopefully they will bounce straight back. two very winnable games coming up, but I aint holding my breathe against Port Vale as we never seem to do well against them

Fleetwood is tricky...We've played them three times so far and never managed a win..I think their position probably doesn't tell the whole story.

    Southend battered us yesterday.

Second half was better, but the first half they were all over us.

A very good side. I'd like to think we might have sorted ourselves out if the penalty had gone in. We didn't deserve anything from them, though.

I disagree , after the 18th minute Southend didn't have another attempt on goal till the second half and then only three in that 45 mins....after the pen we probably had 10 or 12.
They did batter us for several minutes after the goal and should have scored again but the goal itself wasn't exactly a result of building pressure , just a balls up from a keeper assist , but the rest of the match was spent mostly in Southend's half. If Hourihane had put the penalty away..like you point out , would have been a different game...they needed the points and couldn't have opted to get everyone behind the ball.
