Perhaps he could tweet "sorry" for missing the target from the spot. Given that he's such a sensitive soul. We'll forgive him if he understands that criticism is a two way thing.
There was the penalty miss. I believe his third in four attempts. His play today and his midfield partner was very poor. Hammill also wasn't his usual self, and I initially why change a winning team, only to discover Isgrove wasn't even on the bench. Over, all we missed simple chances, and although Southend seemed better, they were a dirty team, and the referee didn't help.
We missed simple chances? They missed more than we did. About half a dozen in the first half. We were lucky to get away with 2-0 (apart from their goalie's non dismissal, which should have changed everything)
Shots per the stats show we were two ahead in total plus one more on target. Where you get half a dozen in the first half, I don't know.
Hourihane isn't a very convincing penalty taker, in my opinion. He's scored 7 out of 10 in a Barnsley shirt, but I'm never very confident when he steps up. There's been a few that have only just gone in, which have been too close for comfort to either the post or keeper.
He's missed against Rochdale, Sheffield United and who else? May becoming a little predictable favouring bottom right. He said in an interview he changed tactic against United because he went the other way the game before.. the keeper did him then as well. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Too late to edit my post, but he's actually scored 6 out of 9 penalties. The site I was looking at listed the same penalty twice.
Something I said last season but was bombarded with criticism for. He isnt a brilliant penalty taker, nor is he a brilliant corner taker or direct free kick taker. A lot of his penalties are scuffed. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
How many saves did their keeper have to make? I can only remember Chapmans cross/shot at the end of the first half. They should have been 3 up inside 20 minutes. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Sometimes though no matter how much pressure you exert on a (competent in Southend's case)10 man defence it just won't drop for you...yesterday was one of those days.
I'll never really understand why a professional footballer sometimes cannot hit a goal area eight feet high and twenty four feet wide from only twelve yards out when there is only one man in his way. I know that is over-simplifying it a bit but come on! Just hit the ball hard and fairly high and it is a certain goal, anywhere you like. The keeper will always move one way or the other, thus making himself shorter and increasing the target area. Adam Hammill had the right idea against Fleetwood. Hard and high and unstoppable. Ok, it might have come back off the bar, but it went in. These side foot tippy tap efforts really annoy me. The keeper has every chance of stopping them. Yesterday though the keeper won the mind game competition and the ref let him get away with it. A second booking for gamesmanship was the only punishment but he bottled out of it, and Hourihane did the same. Lost his nerve; tried to slam it low into the corner and put it past the post. Keeper went the right way as well.
There was a couple of occasions where it just didnt go for us, Winnalls chance off a long Roberts throw being one but on the whole, we failed to create very much and what we did create we wasted woefully, i.e the penalty and Watkins' sitter. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Perhaps not a great penalty taker or direct free kick taker... but what Hourihane have you been watching to say he's not a good corner taker? He has an outrageous number of assists for us over the past two seasons, most of which come directly from corners! e.g. for Mawson's goal vs Coventry. (He happened to bag himself the other assist in that game from a free kick).
He constantly criticised Hourihane last season. Almost like an obsession. He was just waiting for his chance this season. And he's had to wait until March.
