Forty one years ago today, we won 4-3 away at Newport County. Our star striker, Mick Butler scored a hat trick that day. http://www.barnsley-mad.co.uk/results_service/1974_1975/15/mar/index.shtml Other than one of our players actually scoring a hat trick (once in blue moon!), nothing that startling about the game. However, the following week we beat Rochdale 5-3 at home. The unusual aspect to all this was Mick Butler scored another hat trick! http://www.barnsley-mad.co.uk/results_service/1974_1975/22/mar/index.shtml In all my years of watching Barnsley, this is the only time when I've seen a Barnsley player score a hat trick in successive league games. Here endeth today's episode of All Our Yesterdays!
Chester, Southport, Workington, Stockport, Lincoln, Darlo. By my reckoning. Newport & Torquay have both recently been in the conference.
I can see seven, Andy. Chester, Darlington, Lincoln City, Torquay United, Southport, Workington & Stockport County. There's another six I've counted in the Third Division. Tranmere Rovers, Grimsby, Halifax, Hereford, Aldershot & Wrexham.
So have York City, who were in the Second Division alongside Manchester United. Carlisle United were in the First Division and won at Manchester City earlier in the week.
Butler would have defeated a 'What's my Line' panel, as he just did not look like a footballer. He was barely ten stone in weight and only 5'8" tall, but seemed to be able to sniff out goals from nowhere. I recall those consecutive hat-tricks, but I think his hero status for me was the game against Bradford City at Oakwell. it was his first back after two broken legs. He came on as sub with the score at 0-2 and scored twice to gain us a 2-2 draw. Such a hero. I wonder what became of him. He went on to play for Huddersfield and Bournemouth, but I am not sure what after that. He started with us, playing as an amateur in the first team, having been unearthed by Jim Iley, who was good at trawling local sides for gems, including Anton Otulakowski etc. Happy days.
I remember seeing him play for Athersley Social. I may be wrong but I though we signed him from Worsbrough Bridge.
A close second to Ronnie Glavin in my all time Oakwell heroes list. A natural goalscorer if ever there was one.
I remember the game against Bradford very well, they were our arch enemies, our biggest derbies at the time. But it was his return from his first broken leg that season. He had his leg broken for a second time a few weeks later in our 2-1 victory at Workington, which sidelined him for the rest of the season. Mick & Peter Price scored our goals that day, the only time they scored together in the same game. He didn't play again until the following season, when he scored the winner in our 1-0 home win over Watford in the opening fixture of the following campaign.
