http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-35814215 For people who are unfamiliar with academies this means that schools will have no requirement to employ qualified teachers, they do not have to follow the National Curriculum, they can change the pay and conditions for teachers, schools can set their own hours and term dates, parents cannot complain to the LA in regard to admissions (they must appeal to the Academy and then directly to the Secretary of State), schools can be run for profit plus many many other implications.
I've heard a lot about the negatives of changing to academies but what are the benefits? There must be some surely?
They can potentially have more money as they can be run for profit and they get money given for converting. (However, they then have to buy in services that the LA usually provide and they have to pay VAT on everything excluding staffing.) They don't have to follow the curriculum and therefore could be specialist in a particular area. They can be open longer and on weekends so some parents may prefer not having to pay as much in childcare fees. They have a much higher exclusion rate (good if you're a parent of a well-behaved child).
If they don't have to follow a curriculum then what recognised qualifications would the kids come away with?
errrrrrrm ? so Jamster just help me through this a mo'.. so you are saying no need for qualifications and can employ anyone... so can I apply as a P.E. teacher in an academy Girls school?? or perhaps head of the Photography class? and I would be more than happy to go on the field trips, I would wrap up warm in my balaclava and duffle coat... promise Just wondering like. I have a strong suspicion that I am about to be sent to the 'Naughty Step'
Re: errrrrrrm ? so Jamster just help me through this a mo'.. What's disappointing is that despite voicing opposition Labour Councils are not fighting hard to keep schools in local authority control.
Re: errrrrrrm ? so Jamster just help me through this a mo'.. In short, yes. To be fair though, Private schools don't have to employ qualified teachers either so you could go work there anyway.
I don't know. At the moment I think Academies are still taking the same exams but they don't have to teach the National Curriculum (although they do of course have to teach the children the things they need to know to pass the exams). For the core subjects I doubt much will change, it is the foundation subjects that could be dropped with no real bother.
KEWLL..so.. therefore.. my nefarious trips to my local Ann summers , coupled with my very flexible 'Tupperware parties.. should see me in good stead
Jam Drop, not at all hard to see how this could degenerate into the schools with wealthier parents engineering more and more funds and getting better and better results. Those in more deprived areas and with less well-off parents however......... Don't need to fill in the rest? In short, it looks very much like the beginnings of privatisation of the education system? So not content with sinking the NHS below the waterline, this iniquitous government are now having a crack at education? I have to say this is very instructional, because weren't academies the brainchild of Anthony Lynton Blair?
Just another way of funnelling public money into private hands in the form of 'charitable trusts' No doubt everyone of these charitable trusts is headed up by a Tory bum boy on a six figure salary.
Academies are still bound by the same performance measures as state schools. Progress 8 ensures becoming the main headline measure from this September ensures that schools will have to focus more & give more teaching time to Maths, English & the EBacc subjects. This leaves very little room for subjects like Music, Art, Performing Arts etc which are dropping off schools curriculum's everywhere.
When outside a school today when interview every parent without exception praised the academy. The.one in question. Was in Doncaster
Explain why there is a larger % of academy schools with a higher percentage of ri or inadequate schools. There is not a single piece of evidence to show that academies improve attainment
Certainly are, the people who own and run then become multi millionaires through tax payers money. ..
If you are PRO worker, take a step backwards and look how these bar stewards have shafted workers rights then ...
