Any ideas?

    We , being ****, put the ball out of play near our dugouts to lots of groans from the fans. They head off 20 yards into their half to take the throw in to boos from the fans. Referee blows his whistle to cheers from the fans as it looks like he's finally got some balls and is going to make them take it from the right place. Instead they put the ball on the floor and take a free kick.

    Any idea?

    I think the linesman never flagged for the ball going out of play, even though it looked well out, so when Williams caught the ball the ref gave a free kick for handball.

    Possibly??

    That's exactly what happened.

    The ball never went out but Williams caught it. Linesman gave a free kick for hand ball

    The ball looked well out, and eventually the lino did flag for a throw in. But the referee overruled it and gave the hand ball.
