Can you blame him Micky Finn. It did Jordan Clark wonders to stay at Oakwell didn't it. Digby and RNL also fell foul of the system and not getting opportunity's too. I'd imagine both could have left at say 18 to a top club.
Not saying Holgate isn't a good player but I wouldn't attach any importance to playing for England U20s. You do realise most of them end up dropping down the leagues and fading into obscurity don't you?
So you're moaning about some players leaving because they didn't get the chance to play but you're gagging to get holgate back thus potentially denying some of our players (Roberts) their place in the 1st team.
Strange I'm doing the thing I never do and agreeing with HT. Fantastic player with skill and composure. One for the future. I'd have him back in a heartbeat. Dnt get the cut off your bones to spite your face vibe. He's a young lad he got offered loads of cash he moved on who wouldn't.
And this idea that he is suddenly a professional level centre back despite having never played a professional game at centre back and being our second choice right back (when both Bree and holgate were fit) is bizarre
I don't blame him one bit for moving on but the idea of him suddenly being an excellent centre back who could displace our own is laughable and based on no evidence whatsoever
He could provide cover and pressure on places across the back. Both Mawson and Roberts have had their periods of poorer displays and we have little to challenge them given Nyatanga's form this season.
He did not endear himself to the Oakwell faithful by the manner of his departure and that is why there is hostility towards his return. He is easily worth a place in our team next season. Doubt it'll happen though.

Can we please remember that BARNSLEY where inviting people to watch him with the view of selling the defender. The Huddersfield game was go and prove to them that you're good enough and maybe the best team that came took him off us.
Cracking player. But bloody all sorts of stuff to be settled before we can start thinking about who we might be signing in the summer. We've the playoff chase, a Wembley final, a head coach to appoint, players to retain, players to release, bids for our better players to deal with, and so on and so on... But based on us being a L1 club next season, I think he'd be a great addition for the full campaign. Even if we go up, he'd surely be worth having on the books for a season. Not really arsed about him wanting to leave. It's football. Hammill, Hourihane, Mawson, Winnall.... in fact, every one of our current squad would choose to leave tomorrow if they were offered massive increases in salary and contract length, by so-called bigger clubs. As would you or I in most instances in our own jobs. Note that I've said 'most' there. This is why lads like Hassell and Steele in recent years were so well-regarded by supporters. They stayed here despite probably having better opportunities to leave/develop/progress. As players, and financially. My only concern would be the fact he's not had a loan this season. I don't understand why that is. He's not had a sniff of the 1st team despite Everton's awful season, especially at the back. Weird that. I will state now though, that if we're not promoted I fully expect Bree and Mawson to be sold. So we'll need replacements. And, I enjoyed watching young Mason. He had a bit of Stonesy about him. When we beat Huddersfield last summer in that friendly, a player I know said "he was unreal, that Holgate". And he knows a player, because he's one and he too left BFC for money that has set him up for life. So long as these so-called greedy basterds perform for us whilst here, no problem. It's the likes of Frimpong I take issue with. Highly paid wastes of space. Whose years and years of training with superstars at Arsenal made no mark on him either as a player or person. The ******* numb nuts.
I rate him very highly but don't want him on loan to replace one of our own or a possible permanent signing. But then I'm still smarting over Drinkwater.
No thanks I'd rather we develop our own players bree and George williams are doing great. He hasn't played a competitive game scince leaving us. It's a no from me can still remember him getting builied by Jamie forester at keepmoat and poor displays at Deepdale and others. People are seeking as if he was another John stones pffft
