Don't know if it's been previously posted, but This will be the last time that Johnston's will be sponsoring the trophy. We could be the last ever winners.

The trophy will still exist just under a different name

If it's engraved 'Johnston's' how can it be used by some other company?

Isn't the official name of the tournament "Football League Trophy" or something? Johnstone('s Paint?) is just the sponsor. A few years ago it was called LDV Vans Trophy, and before that it was Auto Windscreens Trophy/something. Same tournament, different sponsor. The Premier League hasn't always been called Barclays Premier League either, wasn't Carling the main sponsor for a long time?

After typing all this, I realised that I totally missed the point of your post. :p Nevermind.

Yeah, there will probably be a new trophy, but the tournament itself will remain the same.

Hopefully it will not concern us next season. Bigger fish to fry in the Championship. :)

Actually looking at past pictures it looks like the trophy physically changes depending on sponsor. When it was the LDV Vans Trophy, it looked like this http://www.stevesfootballstats.co.uk/media/images/user-images/1309/ldvvanstrophy.png

Unlike, say the League Cup, which always stays the same, as engraved on it is 'Football League Cup', not 'Capital One Cup'

So we could be the last team to physically when that trophy, but obviously the competition will remain

    it was un-sponsored at first

It began as the Association Members cup in 1983 then in 1992 it began being sponsored
    Freight Rover
    Sherpa Vans
    Leyland DAF
    Autoglass
    Auto Windscreens
    LDV Vans
    Johnstones Paint

so next season it will be a new sponsor, oh and yes the current trophy does have Johnstones paint engraved on it... but that should come off with a spot of Turps mebbe :D:D:D:D

    its on wiki about it

It was the auto windscreens shield, looked like the charity shield a bit but wood backed.

So they obviously change the trophy. So we might get to keep it...

True I never realised that. But it has been the same since 1991 regardless of sponsor:

    Wiki article
The winners receive the Football League Cup,[1] of which there have been three designs - the current one also being the original - a three handled Georgian style urn with separate plinth (added later). Designed and manufactured by Mappin & Webb, it weighs 2.976 kg and measures 27 cm by 20.5 cm. It is worth around £20,000.[1] It was used until the 1980-81 competition, before coming back into use ever since the 1990-91 competition.[21] The reason for the break in usage was the introduction for the first time of a competition sponsor - the Milk Marketing Board, who chose to awarding their own trophy from 1981–82 to 1985–86.[22] The next sponsor, Littlewoods, also chose to award their own trophy, from 1986–87 until 1989–90.[23] Later sponsors have used the original.

We were the last winners of the Sheffield & Hallamshire County Cup.
I wonder of that's stuck in a cupboard somewhere at Oakwell or maybe it's on John Dennis's mantelpiece.
