There's something about him that gives me the impression that he really understands what it really is like to be professional footballer, and how supporters like us see it as a privilege. His route to the pro level hasn't been directly through an academy system (he was a scholar at MKD but left for University I think?) , he's played non league and gone from there. I think he's a breath of fresh air. Highlight of the season for me was when we played away at Bradford and he slid to block a cross from their right winger, winger tried again and GW was already up and blocked again, and then crunched same winger with a tackle to concede a throw. All in front of the away end. White, Smith and Bree have different qualities, but GW has a fire in his belly that I love. Tremendous player. Sent from my SM-T710 using Tapatalk
Really like him. His attitude is excellent. I noticed in the Chesterfield game after Wembley - even though he'd been dropped - unfairly in most people's eyes when he jogged to the subs bench he high fived all the kids holding flags and applauded the west stand - when most other people would have been sulking. He's definitely earned a new contract - hopefully it's just a formality. Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
I think he could develop in to one off the best full backs we have ever had out side the Premiership Squad. I wasn't so sure about him when I first saw him play but he would be the first name on the team sheet for me.
Yes. I actually think he's a better option at full back than Aidy White. Williams has to be one of the first players we offer a new deal in the summer, after Hammill. Sent from my I-Oven using the internets
I think it depends what you want from a full back. For me he's the best because I'm of the belief that a full backs main aim is to defend & he's the best at it. But a lot of managers want full backs who are like wingers. For example I imagine the Barcelona manager would prefer Bree & White to Williams because they offer more going forward. For me the best full back in the premiership this season has been Christian Fuchs but he doesn't get noticed much because he doesn't go bombing forward much but he's a quality defender.
He was immense again yesterday - you wouldn't think he was playing out of position. I would give him the shirt EVERY week - either at right or left back. Within the first minute he got clobbered by the Big Burton striker but got up and carried on like the true Professional he is. Great find.
He's an excellent defender, not much gets past him at all and he reads the game very well. He needs to work on his attacking game but he's been brilliant for the last few weeks and really come from nowhere.
In my opinion, he is our best fullback currently and should be first on the team sheet at right back. Looking to next season, we have a superb foundation to build on (notwithstanding who we might lose in the midfield and forwards however - which is a major concern). In Davies, Williams, Bree, Mawson, and Robetrts we have the foundation of a superb defence in this division (assuming we don't make the play offs and go up). Davies, Mawson and Roberts have grown immensely over the course of the season, whilst Bree offers immense potential.
we may have a solid defence, but if we don't go up the rest of the team may well disappear. i can see another rebuild
He's the kind of full back who is ideal to play behind someone like Adam hammill. AH is tremendous but he's not the greatest at supporting a full back when we're being attacked, so a sitting full back behind him is ideal. He's not played much behind him though
Agreed. The club needs to find a way of balancing the current transfer policy with some form of sustainable league progression.
The key players are undoubtedly Hammill, Hourihane and Winnall I think the loan players, whilst they are all good, can be replaced if we can't sign them permanently Hopefully no one else, like Watkins, will attract attention. From an outsider's perspective theose three are the ones who stand out I think we could recover from losing one of those if we get a good fee (although this wouldn't be the case for Hammill, unless he signs a contract then gets sold), and in that case hopefully we wouldn't have to rebuild again. There is no doubt another Hourihane or another Winnall in League 1/2 who we could sign. But good recruitment is vital whichever league we are in to avoid a slow start
