What is it about this lad that the management believe is worth a starting position; what have I missed?

    He seems to divide opinion.

I watched him Tuesday night & thought he did really well. Won lots of headers (more than I've seen any Barnsley striker win in a game this season) & should've had an assist with a quality ball for Winnall when he hit the post.

He did well at Wembley when he came on & although I've not been to Burton I listened the full match & Bobby Hassell praised him a lot, was really impressed with him yet I've read you & a couple on Twitter criticise him.

I think he's been picked because Winnall & Fletcher don't seem to make a good partnership & Fletcher doesn't have the same impact starting as he does when he comes off the bench.

I'm not sure what game Bobby was watching today. Toney was very poor, didn't battle for the ball and made the wrong decisions the few times he was in a good position. Winnall was no better either. Neither employed any of the undoubted quality they have at Burton.

I think Sam misses too many, listening on the radio he was Sam "should have scored" Winnall. In contrast there was Billy "doesn't miss from there" sharp. If Sam was a "doesn't miss from there" type of striker he would be top class. Unfortunately he has a very comprehensive set of places where he can miss from in his locker.

Is that the Billy Sharp who we could never afford/persuade to come here? The one who's scored one goal less than Sam this season?

that argument wouldn't stack up though would it, maybe Sharp hasn't had as many chances as Sam?
BTW I'm not saying I like him I don't just saying its possible for one striker to score more goals than another but have a way worse conversion rate.

I wasn't using those stats to prove either one was better than the other. Just to prove that one isn't top class and the other a liability in front of goal; which is what the op seemed to imply.

As a team in the final third we took the wrong option on many occasions and were also shot shy. Once again we under utilised Izzy in preference for a well marked Hammill.

Sorry if I'm at cross purposes. I thought you meant Sam was inferior to Sharp. I'd put them roughly on a par.

I agree. What I was trying to say is that Sharps reputation in the commentators head was "Sharp doesn't miss from there" and that's the reputation I would like Sam to have. I can't argue with Sams numbers but there is a frustration that it could have been a lot more and I'm sure he thinks that as well.

Ahhh sorry! I'm with you now. And I'd agree. He probably could/should score a few more. If he did he'd never have been here in the first place though. Maybe he's one of those players who can nick goals at any level, who knows. I do know he always seems to care about his contribution and how the team is doing. He's done a great job for us.

That's because the commentators at Dee dar are biased. They are friends with people like billy sharp

Sheffield united fans on billy sharp:
Bladesman: He has had the chances to get more than just one goal in a match.

Swissblade: He could quite easily be bagging 'double hattricks' with the chances he gets

1973Blade: could have had a hat trick today.

They're all comments this week in just one thread.

PS Sharp has only 15 goals from open play (ie not pens), winnall has 19. And that's in a side that was in the relegation zone for half a season

It was just an observation while listening to to match, i wasn't making any reference to the standard of Billy Sharp just how someone can gain a reputation as "doesn't miss from there". Could have been anybody.
